Oftentimes, one will feel the possible effects of lymphedema before a clinician can measure for it. In fact, the area can have an increase in fluid volume up to 30% before it is visualized or measurable.
Ways to reduce the risk of developing lymphedema:
- Protect your arm: Limit or avoid cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites, needle pokes, and blood pressure measurements on the affected side.
- Rest your arm: Exercise and stretching are encouraged but progress low and slow, monitoring for any changes in the arm or breast.
- Heat: May increase the swelling because with heat comes increase in blood flow.
- Elevation: keeping your arm above the level of the heart may help to lessen the swelling.
- Tight clothing/ jewelry: Try not to wear anything that will restrict blood flow.
- Skin care: Keep the skin and nails clean and trimmed to reduce the risk of infection.

Fiber offers countless health benefits, but it is important increase your fiber intake slowly over time to avoid bloating or gas. Find Your Fiber February
Challenge #9
Fiber is an umbrella term for types of carbohydrates that the body cannot digest. Even though the body doesn’t use fiber as fuel, don’t be fooled into thinking it lacks health benefits. Fiber helps lower cholesterol, promotes a healthy body weight, adds bulk to the digestive tract, helps control blood sugar, and be protective against colon cancer. Start increasing your fiber by eating 3 grams of fiber at every meal or snack. Common foods with 3 grams of fiber per serving are a medium banana or orange, 1 cup of strawberries, or a large handful of carrots.
