After a week-long trial, tried by Kline & Specter attorney Jim Waldenberger, a Lycoming County jury awarded $2,300,000 on September 4, 2020 to a Williamsport couple, Harold and Veronica Getting, 77 and 75 years old, for a left foot amputation injury suffered by Harold Getting as a result of a riding lawn mower accident. The trial was one of the first to occur in Pennsylvania during the pandemic.
Mr. Getting leased a Troy-Bilt, 30", ride mower from Mark Sales and Leasing in Williamsport. The salesperson, who recommended the mower — but denied doing so — had not read the mower's manual or warnings and therefore did not know of the 12 degree slope limitation of the mower. He then delivered the mower, without its manual, to the Getting property and saw the steep slopes, but still went through with the lease. When Mr. Getting used the mower, it became unstable on a slope in excess of 12 degrees and he suffered a partial amputation of his foot with resulting nerve damage.
The jury deliberated for 1.5 hours and awarded $1,500,000 for Mr. Getting’s pain and suffering, $300,000 for his disfigurement, and $500,000 to Mrs. Getting for loss of companionship and support. The jury also attributed 15% fault to Mr. Getting for the incident.
Kline & Specter appellate team of Charles Becker and Andra Laidacker, along with Tom Kline, succeeded in arguments convincing the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to deny the efforts of Janssen Pharmaceutical to have a $70 million verdict overturned. The $70 million verdict, obtained by co lead counsel Jason and Cory Itkin, stands and paves the way for a punitive damages trial against Johnson & Johnson over their antipsychotic drug Risperdal.

Nadeem Bezar is teaching the first of its kind course to students this fall at Temple’s Beasley School of Law. The writing course, entitled Child Abuse and Sex Trafficking of Minors, was highly anticipated by Beasley staff and students alike and filled immediately—with a waitlist that followed. Students in the course have the opportunity to learn from Bezar’s decades of experience handling cases involving child abuse, human trafficking, sexual assault and Title IX violations on college and university campuses. Bezar’s course, which provides students with both an introduction to the legal nuances of child abuse and trafficking cases and a toolkit of practical litigation skills, is aimed at raising awareness of the vital importance of zealously advocating for the most vulnerable members of our society.
Meet Andy Stern! Andy joined Kline & Specter as a partner in 2005. Since joining Kline & Specter, Andy has represented victims of medical malpractice, catastrophic injuries and product liability. Notably, Stern represented a woman injured in the Center City Philadelphia building collapse for which he obtained the largest personal injury recovery in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. That case formed the basis of a book published titled “Justice Under the Rubble: The Salvation Army Building Collapse” written by Andy Stern with co-author George Anastasia. He has also achieved a number of other record verdicts and settlements in catastrophic injury cases in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Currently, Stern represents victims of the Boeing/Ethiopian Flight 302 air crash, and is an active member of the Plaintiffs’ executive committee in that complex litigation. In 2019, Andy and his wife, Gwen Stern made a substantial monetary contribution that helped create the opening of the Kline School of Law Andy and Gwen Stern Community Lawyering Clinic located at Drexel’s Dornsife Center.

Meet Elizabeth Crawford! Liz is a graduate of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law and a partner at Kline & Specter P.C. Since joining Kline & Specter in 2013 after clerking for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Liz has worked on several multi-million dollar cases. Most notably, Liz won a $4.7 million verdict last year in a medical malpractice case - a rare victory for a plaintiff in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Liz also served as co-counsel with Andy Stern in the Center City building collapse where she was involved in obtaining a verdict against the Salvation Army and the largest personal injury settlement for a victim of $95.6 million dollars. Liz also served as co-counsel in a case involving a verdict against CHOP for $10.1 million dollars that was affirmed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and a $7.4 million dollar verdict in Delaware County. Liz was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer - Rising Star in 2019 and 2020.
