The brave, the heroic, the life-savers … many thanks to the 911 EMS providers who continue to serve the Mid-Valley ! We appreciate your service to our community !!
Thank you to Henry and George Sander for donating goodie bags for frontline nurses at Knapp Medical Center !! Henry, age 16, and George, age 15, are the children of Dr. Michael & Jennifer Sander of Weslaco. Both Henry and George are students at Weslaco High School. Henry is interested in eventually studying aerospace engineering while George is interested in studying to be an anesthesiologist. Their goodie bags included healthy foods such as oranges as well as some chocolates. They realized how busy nurses and other healthcare workers are during this time … and wanted to make sure they don’t go hungry while helping to save lives of patients. How thoughtful !!

Can an apple a day really keep the doctor away? Not always -- but adding apples to your diet can help you get more fiber, vitamin C, and other antioxidants that support overall health and nutrition. Look for apples that are firm to the touch and free from bruises and soft spots.
Remember, healthy eating can help reduce the risk of many diseases – including cardiovascular disease, the #1 cause of death on the planet. Taking charge of our diet and our heart health benefits not only ourselves - but also our loved ones.

November is Eye Donation Month … and giving the gift of sight – through cornea donation – can be life-giving and life-changing. Donors who donate their cornea (the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye) can restore sight for those with cornea-related blindness. Eye donation can also help in research and education -- potentially helping thousands of people regain their sight as researchers gain new understanding of the cause and effects of eye conditions that lead to blindness. For more information, please contact the San Antonio Eye Bank @saeyebank at 210-614-1209 or visit www.saeyebank.org.

Many thanks to all of the fantastic women physicians who help save lives every day here in the Mid-Valley and throughout the country !! Today is National Women Physicians Day and we are so grateful to these dedicated and caring healthcare heroes.
Today, February 3rd, marks the 199th birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to obtain a medical degree in the United States (in 1849). Elizabeth Blackwell championed the participation of women in the medical profession and ultimately opened her own medical college for women. We celebrate her achievements and the strides that have been made by generations of women physicians.
You can learn more about the many ways that women have influenced and enhanced the practice of medicine by exploring an online exhibit from the National Library of Medicine:
https://cfmedicine.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/
From the exhibit: “Women have always been healers. As mothers and grandmothers, women nursed the sick in their homes. As midwives, wise women, and curanderas, women cared for people in their communities. Yet, when medicine became established as a formal profession in Europe and America, women were shut out.”
“Nevertheless, they waged a long battle to gain access to medical education and hospital training and, since then, women have overcome prejudices and discrimination to create and broaden opportunities within the profession.”
Thanks again to all these courageous women physician champions … these days we need you more than ever !!
Going out ? These days, it’s good to keep some extra items on hand when in public spaces: masks, of course … and don’t forget hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes, if possible.
The CDC has all kind of tips for making your outing safer, whether you’re going to a doctor’s visit, the grocery story, visiting family and friends, celebrating (such as on Super Bowl weekend), etc. Get all the details at:

Many thanks to Reyna's Texas Style Bar-B-Q in Weslaco who recently donated delicious chopped beef brisket sandwiches to frontline healthcare heroes at Knapp Medical Center !! We really appreciate your generosity to these champions who are providing life-saving care for our community !!
February is National Heart Month, and Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco is offering a “Heart Saver” CT scan for a special cash price of $50 for Mid-Valley residents who would like to determine if they may be at risk for heart disease.
The “HeartSaver” is a CT scan which can indicate calcium or plaque build-up in the coronary arteries. If the patient is at risk for heart disease, they are encouraged to work with their physician on taking steps to reduce the risk -- such as healthy eating, exercise as recommended by their doctor, making other lifestyle changes to benefit their health, and taking medication if necessary to control cholesterol and / or high blood pressure.
The HeartSaver CT Scan can help disclose heart disease at various stages, making it easier for the physician to treat the disease.
Knapp Medical Center is taking all necessary precautions so patients can safely receive these important screenings. Mid-Valley patients are encouraged to work with their doctor during National Heart Month and throughout the year on ways to avoid potentially life-threatening heart attacks and stroke.
To schedule an appointment for the $50 Heart Saver CT scan during the month of February, please call (956) 969-5176 or (956) 969-5335.
Wondering how you can do your daily activities safely while protecting yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19?
The more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 being spread.
So, think about:
· How many people will be there?
· Will the space be indoors or outdoors?
· Will you spend a lot of time with others?
(Here’s a hint … think “PST” -- people, space, and time.)
If in doubt, why take chances at this stage ? If it’s something that can wait, it may be a good investment to put it off a few more weeks or months … until hopefully the situation improves with the pandemic. Stay safe !!
