The Low Down on Pink Eye
Pink Eye, also known as conjunctivitis involves inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the thin, clear tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. The inflammation makes the blood vessels in the eye easier to see and gives the affected eye a reddish or pink coloring. The affected eye(s) may be painful, itchy or have a burning sensation. Commonly, eyes can also tear or have a discharge that forms a crust during sleep causing the eyes to be “stuck shut” in the morning.
There are many causes of Pink Eye. It can be the result of a bacterial infection but it can also be caused by a virus. It can also stem from an allergic reaction or irritants such as chlorine or smog. An accurate diagnosis by a healthcare provider is crucial to receiving the proper treatment. Prolonged use of your computer, tablet, e-reader, or cell phone can lead to a group of eye-related problems referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain. You may experience the following symptoms if you’ve been spending a lot of time looking at a screen:
• eyestrain
• headaches
• blurred vision
• dry eyes
• neck and shoulder pain
To help alleviate symptoms of digital eye strain, use the simple 20-20-20 rule: Take a 20 second break, every 20 minutes, and look at something 20 feet away. In some cases, individuals who do not require the use of eyeglasses for other daily activities may benefit from glasses prescribed specifically for computer use.
Check out our website for more information or call our office if you are interested in setting up an appointment for computer glasses. www.kofosfamilyeyecare.com
