#KohnArchitecture #DeerResistantGardens #PietOudolf #LandscapeDesign #DiyLandscapeDesign #ChappaquaArchitecture #WestchesterLanscapeDesign #HighLine When we first created this patio and stone retaining wall in back of our house, we planted the whole back area with Pachysandra. The first year it did well. Then it started to thin. A combination of too much sun and constant deer foraging took its toll. It used to be more shady, then some trees died and had to be removed. Pachysandra is supposed to be deer resistant. For a few years I would replant the Pacy, and every winter the deer would come down from the woods and chow down on the only thing green around. Depressing to say the least. Last year I tried planting Bearberry. They are supposed to grow almost anywhere and the deer are supposed to ignore them. Well the joke was on me. This winter, I would wake up in the morning, look out the Kitchen window and low and behold, the little buggers would be calmly munching on those expensive Bearberries that we had planted 4 months earlier. Aaargh! This year I have decided to take a different tack. Granted, I have learned that there is no such thing as a deer resistant garden. This year I am going to try a combination of native plantings that supposed to be more deer resistant than most plants. I have admired Piet Oudolf's work ever since he designed the landscaping for the High Line in New York City. It might be like spitting into the wind, or pulling on Superman's cape, but I am forging ahead. Using his design concepts as a starting point and pairing that with perennial deer resistant plantings like Russian Sage and Lavander Cotton, I hope to perservere. Supposedly the smell of the Russian Sage and the texture of some of the other plants is repugnant to deer. And hopefully these plants will activate this now barren area behind my house. I will also tell you that I am going to cheat. Once it is all planted, I am going to put up a deer fence around the back of this area while the tender young plants get established. The idea being that as the plants grow they will cover up the fencing and it will disappear. I am hoping that once the grass is also tall and established, it will be a pyschological barrier to the deer as well. Obviously thou thinkest too much! So yesterday after laying it all out, arranging the color, shape, contrasts and figuring the quantities, I went out looking for the plants. It's pretty early in the season, so most nurseries around my area of Westchester don't have a lot of good perennials in stock yet. However, I did score the the Russian Lavender at half price at Blossom Nursery and the Artemisia at Rosedale. It looks like I will have to get the rest online. To save money I am going to get the some of the other plants in seeds and bulbs. It may take a couple of seasons for this garden to really take, but patience is a virtue, I hope to achieve. Luckily I can get good compost and mulch from the Town of New Castle (Chappaqua). They make it themselves from fallen trees, leaves and other organic materials that are collected and sell it for $10 a cubic yard + delivery. Delivery brings it up, but still a great deal. So, hopefully I don't just create a deer salad bar and by mid summer we should have a little bit of the Highline to look out at from our Kitchen window. Stay tuned. Wish me luck! Guy Kohn.
