[edit: this post was originally meant to be posted on Wednesday, November 11th. Due to technical difficulties, it was not. Our apologies!] Well, in typical 2020 fashion, our last center newsletter seems to be almost prophetic. We found out yesterday that one of our Kumon students has tested positive for Covid-19. We will be contacting each family via email or phone call today, but we also want to post here that we will be closed for class so that we can disinfect the classroom and so that Mr. Phil and staff members can get tested immediately. As mentioned before, Mr. Phil’s last Covid-19 test was on Saturday, November 7th, and it was negative. He is scheduled for another test this Friday. Once those results are in, we will know what we plan to do moving forward. Tentatively, it is possible that we could re-open as soon as Monday or stay closed until December. Regardless of that outcome, we will start distributing work for the rest of November today. All our Kumon families can stop in to pick up work during class hours. We will also be utilizing our plastic bins outside and putting each family’s work in a sealed ziplock bag with the last name of the students written on it. You can stop by at any time to pick up work as well. We are sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we believe this is the safest way to move forward. We want to make sure we aren’t the reason why the virus spreads in our community. Zoom sessions are still available and just in case you forgot, here is our virtual classroom ID: 852 133 0502 Please log in with your first and last name. Mr. Phil has a waiting room feature that requires approval by him to enter the classroom. To prevent unwanted guests from entering our virtual classroom, Mr. Phil only admits names that he recognizes. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email Mr. Phil at philkwon@ikumon.com Thank you and stay safe and healthy! The Kumon of Birmingham Staff

Well good hello, Kumon families! Very briefly, we want to announce a few things: First, Mr. Phil has tested negative for Covid-19 on Friday, November 13th, 2020. This is a great sign because Mr. Phil had direct contact with the student who tested positive for Covid-19. This means that the safety measures we have been using at our center have been very effective. Second, Gov. Whitmer has issued some new protocol for a statewide lockdown starting this Wednesday, November 18th. Even if Kumon of Birmingham is still on the list of businesses that are allowed to stay open, we will remain closed for in person learning until the lockdown is lifted on Wednesday, December 9th. This decision is based on advice from several healthcare professionals, as well as Mr. Phil's own research into this specific pandemic and how it has affected families in the metro Detroit area. He understands that we have been really lucky to have not had a major outbreak out our center, and is taking this opportunity to make sure it stays that way. Many families have already picked up their homework for the rest of November. We have prepared work for every student over the weekend and you can stop by to pick up assignments at your convenience. We will also prepare homework for the first two weeks of December after Thanksgiving. We are hopeful that we can re-open after the three week lockdown is over. However, it's been made clear that contingency plans for this pandemic are always necessary. We will continue with virtual learning for as long as we need to.

Well good hello, Kumon families! It has been quite a few months since our last update as things have gotten much busier at our center with our re-opening after the lockdown and also our move to fully open on all class days in September. So, we apologize for the lack of updates on our blog. Things are moving along and we have been able to help many of our students adjust to the "new normal." This year, Kumon of Birmingham will be closed for Thanksgiving starting Monday, November 23rd, through Sunday, November 29th. We will resume our normal office and class hours on Monday, November 30th. However, Mr. Phil wants you to know that this is tentative. Looking at the rise in new Covid-19 cases reported each day, it's clear we are in the middle of a huge spike. We had more new cases on Monday, November 9th, than we have ever had before (more than double the amount we had back in June). There is a good chance that we could close down earlier and stay closed for longer. Mr. Phil has been in touch with a Kumon parent who is an epidemiologist (infectious diseases) and has been receiving great advice on PPE, safety measures, Covid-19 protocol, and an outlook for the winter season. The biggest concern is that, with flu season now upon us, that virus coupled with Covid-19 could be very dangerous for any person of any background of any age. Our goal is to keep our families safe. Many of you may have already heard from schools about possible closings or extended periods of virtual learning only and no in person learning. Mr. Phil has been keeping a close eye on these numbers and taking into consideration every safety precaution that he can. If there ever was a case of exposure at our center, as mentioned in a previous post, our center will close down immediately until Mr. Phil can at least confirm that he is negative for Covid-19 (the center will remain shut down if Mr. Phil tests positive). Then, he will inform parents of ways to pick up homework and access our Zoom classroom that is available Monday through Thursday from 3-7 p.m. Kumon of Birmingham operated under these conditions for 3.5 months earlier this year, so we are confident that we can do even better if we need to. Please keep in mind that there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding something like this because we could also receive a local or federal government mandate to shut down again. Of course, we hope this is not the case. Don't hesitate to email Mr. Phil if you have any questions or concerns.
Dear Kumon Families, It was brought to our attention that a staff member who attended the center last week has come in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. While the staff member has not currently tested positive, we want to err on the side of caution and will close the center on Monday, February 8th to allow for the center to be professionally deep-cleaned on that date. Any student who normally attends on Monday is welcome to attend on Wednesday, February 10th and will be given their Kumon homework at that time. This includes rescheduling Zoom sessions to Wednesday as well. We are committed to the health and safety of all students, staff and families. After speaking with local health officials, we will close the center on Monday to allow for the professional cleaning to ensure a safe learning environment for the following class session. We will provide you with more information as soon as it is available. If you have any questions, please let us know at birmingham_mi@ikumon.com . We apologize for the inconvenience, and look forward to safely seeing you again soon! Putting the safety of our Kumon families is our highest priority, and hence the short center closure period. Best Regards, -Kumon of Birmingham-
