On Thursday, October 15, Lakewood residents will head to Farmville, Va., with acorns collected for Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University. The acorns will be used to feed bear cubs at the wildlife center! 🐻 Want to help? Acorns need to be whole acorns (not crushed) without holes. Acorns should not be stored in plastic bags as they get too moist and can start to rot quickly. Please use cardboard boxes or paper bags. For the past several months, four members of our team volunteered their time and talents as nurse aides 🩺🩹🥼
When asked why she volunteered, Lakewood's Chaplain said, "Five years ago, a nurse aide introduced herself to me in my office and saw a painting of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet on the wall. She said, ‘I do that every day!’ I’ve always remembered that statement and when the need arose for people to provide that kind of practical care for our residents, I felt compelled to volunteer.”

On Friday, November 6, the Lakewood community honored former resident Bill Whitehead by dedicating the Clubhouse auditorium stage, now named the Whitehead stage, in his memory. Bill Whitehead was a dear friend to many at Lakewood and a cherished drama club member. "When I think of Bill, I remember his great bear hugs, and his big cowboy hat, which was almost as big as his heart. Bill was a great helper at Lakewood and a true friend to the Foundation in support of our mission," said Jodi Leonard, the Vice President of the Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation.
The Lakewood community treasures Bill's memory and all he did to enrich the lives of Lakewood's residents. The Whitehead stage will be an enduring tribute to our beloved friend Bill Whitehead.

See you in 2041! Lakewood residents had the opportunity to bury a time capsule. Contents included a Christmas mask (in the hopes that masks don't have to be worn next Christmas), a March Lakewood calendar, a resident mantra and a few other items. Residents hope those who open it in 20 years can see what we were up to during quarantine. 😷
