ROUGEOU IS DEAD AT 65
Dr. Clyde Rougeou, president emeritus of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, died at his Lafayette residence Wednesday night following a brief illness. He was 65.
Rougeau was USL's fourth president. His presidential term, from 1966-73, was part of a total of 42 years at Southwestern, as student, faculty member and administrator.
Funeral services will be in the Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the USL Foundation or to the USL Alumni Association. Interment will be at the Lafayette Masonic Cemetery. Members of the Hope Lodge, F. & A.M., will conduct masonic services.
Rougeou was known not only for his contributions as a university administrator, but also as one of the nation's top judges of dairy cattle. He was named Man of the Year in Louisiana Agriculture by "Progressive Farmer" magazine in 1965. In 1955 the seventh annual Louisiana Dairy Festival was dedicated to him.
The Rougeou years at USL were a period of rapid growth, both in student numbers and diversity of course offerings. During those seven years, USL grew from 8,400 to 12,000. USL became a Ph.D granting university in 1968, with the initiation of doctorial programs in English, history, microbiology, biology, mathematics, statistics and computer science.
USL reached major college status in basketball with the exciting - and later controversial - team headed by Dwight "Bo" Lamar, the nation's leading scorer. Stiff NCAA penalties imposed on the USL basketball program for rules violations marred the national recognition the team brought to USL in the NCAA playoffs.
During Dr. Rougeou's tenure, more than $34 million of new construction was added to the USL campus. Among the buildings completed were Angelle Hall (music building), Maxim Doucet Hall (mathematics and education), Wharton Hall (nursing and microbiology), the USL Union, two upper floors of Dupre Library, Denbo Dormitory, the 27,000-seat Cajun Field and the USL athletic complex.
Rougeou is native of Lecompte. He earned his bachelor's degree at USL, his master's at Texas A & M, and his Ph.d at the University of Minnesota. He joined the USL faculty in 1937.
At USL, he and Dr. Joel Fletcher, then Dean of Agriculture and later president, developed excellent animal judging teams among USL agriculture students.
Rougeou himself was nationally respected for cattle judging. The November 1958 issue of "Jersey Journal" magazine said of his judging of the All-American Jersey Show: "Dr. Clyde Rougeou worked with studied thoroughness at at a fairly rapid pace in placing his evaluation of the 253 exceptionally fine quality Jerseys. His manner added dignity to an already great show and his reasons, included in the list of class placings ... were delivered with clarity and authority. According to veteran exhibitors, Dr. Rougeou's judging pleased spectators and showmen to an extent seldom reached in national shows during the past 25 years.
He judged four All-American Jersey shows, and was called on to judge other shows across the U.S.
He was presented with many awards for his contributions to agriculture. In addition to being named the Man of the Year in Louisiana Agriculture, he was chosen King Cotton XVII for the 1970 Cotton Festival. The USL College of Agriculture named him its outstanding alumnus in 1966. The Louisiana Cattlemen's Association named Rougeou its 1967 Man of the Year.
Dr. Rougeou was active in many phases of Lafayette community work, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Chamber of Commerce, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Salvation Army and LAGCOE. He was on the governing board of the Gulf South Research Institute, the Deep South Writers Conference, the Louisiana Council for Music and the Performing Arts, and the Louisiana Council on Economic Education.
He was also a member of CODOFIL, the Lafayette Rotary Club, Hope Lodge F. & A.M., Evangeline Shrine Club, Theta XI Fraternity, Alpha Zeta agriculture honorary society, Phi Kappa Phi nation honor society, Blue Key collegiate honor society, and many other professional groups. He is listed in eight different biographical dictionaries.
Dr. Rougeou is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Houston, of Park Rapid, Minnesota; six daughters, Mrs. J. W. (Eileen) Plauche III of Marksville, Mrs. George (Marie Louise) Bennett of Alexandria, Mrs. Barnett (Toni) Harp, Mrs. Richard (Anne) Hargett, Miss Carole "Candy" Rougeou and Miss Nancy Jo Rougeou all of Lafayette; three sons, Benjamin Charles Rougeou of Houston, Dr. Clyde L. Rougeou, Jr., and Randolph Warner Rougeou of Lafayette; three sisters, Miss Ethel Rougeou of Lecompte, Mrs. A.M. (Marjorie) Grayson of West Monroe and Mrs. Olin (Elaine) Strange of Lecompte, and 18 grandchildren.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. until service time Saturday.
The Rev. Jerry Means, pastor, Palestine United Methodist Church, Alexandria, will conduct funeral services.
The Delhomme Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
