Many have asked if the family has a preferred charity for contributions in Jason Schmid’s honor.
Jason was an active and proud member of the Saddleback College community. In loving memory of Jason, the Saddleback College Foundation has founded the JT Schmid Family Endowment to offer Jason’s family and friends an opportunity to support the Athletics Program at Saddleback College. Your contribution to this endowment will make a difference in the lives of Gaucho student athletes by providing ongoing support for the department’s needs, such as team equipment and uniforms, providing an annual scholarship for an outstanding student, and also benefiting student athletes by funding priorities not covered by Saddleback’s operations budget.

Our second interview of the year was with WWII Hero, Mr. Ernest Martinez. Mr. Martinez served with the 2nd Infantry division, one of the first units into France, arriving on the beaches of Normandy June 7th, 1944. As he reflected on his experiences overseas he thought he would never make it home, he remembers being told, there’s only two types of soldiers, those that are dead and those that are going to be. Mr. Martinez’s fate would be different, surviving the war, but barely. After months of heavy fighting Ernest was hit by shrapnel from an artillery shell which tore through his right leg. He still has pieces in it today. Aside from the Purple Heart, he also received a Bronze Star and Silver Star for his bravery.
