Make Your Voice Heard With A Vote 2020 has packed a mean punch in many ways. We have experienced so much in what seems like so little time and the year isn’t over yet! On top of it all, we are in an election year. For many of us, we are still processing the pandemic and how it will affect us moving forward. So, thinking about who we will actually want to lead us through this is essential. What will our country be like post-pandemic? What will the world be like? What new laws, regulations, and ways of being will be implemented? These are very valid questions to consider. Our current administration has done some questionable things. Some of you may or may not be on board with the way things have been unfolding these past 4 years. However, it is crucial that we have leaders that can actually lead us and leaders that hold visions for a society that is just, functional, healthy, and prosperous for all. Voting has been a way for us to have a say in who leads this nation. With the election coming up, learning about candidates and their stand on the issues that matter is key for making an informed decision. The results of this upcoming election will most definitely impact us. The question is, will this impact be progressive or catastrophic? Election Day is officially November 3rd but you can vote early. The early voting period runs from Monday, October 12, 2020 to Friday, October 30, 2020. The voting registration deadline was October 5th. Absentee ballot requests must be received by October 30th and returned by mail or in-person by November 3rd by 7 p.m. For information on where to vote, visit this site. https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do 2020 has been filled with plenty of plot twists. It’s exposed the issues that have plagued this nation for a while. Here’s to the hope of 2021 being filled with the changes we need to drastically improve the conditions of our society. Actualizing the changes we desperately need will start with this upcoming election. We must vote and vote wisely.

Navigating The Holidays During A Pandemic Everywhere you turn there are reports predicting that this winter may be a harsh follow-up to what we experienced back in March of this year. Right now is a good time to prepare for what might come next. This can prevent panic and reactive behavior that leads to more chaos. On top of a possible round 2 of COVID-19, we will soon be entering the holiday season. This season will definitely hit a little differently this year. Many of us may not be able to physically be around loved ones like previous years. Between traveling not really being ideal and practicing social distancing, many of our holiday plans have been reconsidered or cancelled altogether. So, how can we navigate the time of the year that is usually spent exchanging lots of hugs, being around friends and family, and sharing good food and stories around the dinner table, during a pandemic? Get creative. Think about what could be done virtually that could potentially provide some sort of connection and normality. If your family is local, think about ways to celebrate each other in ways that are social distancing friendly. Here are a few ideas and suggestions: Host a special edition Secret Santa. This is an opportunity to really have a good Secret Santa experience. Send out an evite to family and friends who would like to participate. Have everyone mail out their gifts. Everyone involved will receive a surprise gift delivered right to their doorstep. Send Creative Holiday Videos. This could be a great time to flex those creative muscles and do something cool with your family. Instead of mailing out holiday cards, send out a special video to family and friends letting them know how much they mean to you and telling them Happy Holidays. Create a Family/Friends Challenge. Start a holiday challenge where participants have to do something to receive a gift. For example, maybe everyone must find and take a photo of specific items for a virtual scavenger hunt. If you're into working out, you could challenge family and friends to a workout where you do certain workouts for a select period of time. Whatever you choose, make it fun and engaging. The holidays don’t have to be completely ruined. You can still send and receive love and laughs. As a reminder, The Law Offices of Sheryl Burke will be closed on Thursday November 26th and will reopen Monday November 30th 2020.

Beat Depression During the Holidays While the holidays do bring a lot of cheer and joy for many, it can also bring a lot of pain and grief for others. It’s very important to be mindful of this dynamic. For some, the holidays serve as a reminder of the family members who may have passed away, unfortunate incidents that may have occurred in previous seasons, and even reminders of financial lack. The holidays aren’t always joyous for everyone. If you are someone who may have challenges with enjoying the holidays, first know that it is okay. Your feelings are valid and you don’t have to force yourself to wear a mask to pretend like you are unbothered. Also, know that you are not alone. It’s perfectly normal for someone who may have experienced some type of trauma around holidays to not really be in the holiday spirit. However, if you would like to be in a better mental and emotional space around the holidays but just haven’t figured out how, here are 3 ways to overcome depression and anxiety during the holiday season: 1. Honor the memory of your loved ones. If you are dealing with the loss of loved ones, try honoring their memories by revisiting family photo albums or having conversations with other family members as you share and exchange memories you’ve had with those who passed. You could also try writing them a letter. Use the letter as an opportunity to express things you have always wanted to express to them, or as a way to just catch them up on your life. 2. Give back. It’s nearly impossible to feel bad while helping others. Use this season to give back to others. Take a shift at a food kitchen, donate to a women’s shelter, spearhead a food and toy drive, etc. Giving is the gift that keeps on giving. Doing something for someone else could really get you out of your funk. 3. Create new traditions. Many of us encounter a lot of anxiety around the holidays due to not being in the best financial situations. We get caught up in the capitalism and forget that holidays should be more about sharing memories and creating new moments. The fact that we feel the need to spend an arm and a leg on things can easily cause us to miss what’s truly important. Start new traditions for yourself and your family. What if you guys decided not to place the focus on the exchange of material items? Try getting the family together and having everyone go around the room telling each other what they love most about each other. Think about other things you could do that are less focused on spending money and more focused on bonding with those you love. The holidays may be a hard time for you, but you can make it through. Just be sure to give yourself lots of compassion during this time and don’t be afraid to go through the motions because they will pass. You’ve got this!

Need some pressing questions answered? Check out our FAQ page! https://www.sburkelaw.com/faq.cfm
What to do If You’re in a Parking Lot Accident While parking lots can be congested, especially at rush hours and in the holiday season, most of us rarely consider the possibility of being involved in parking lot accidents. As a result, we are often unsure of how to approach parking lot accidents in the aftermath. Ensure Everyone is Safe The health and safety of everyone involved should be the primary focus after any accident. And while parking lot accidents generally occur at lower speeds and seem less severe than a typical accident, this should still be your first concern. While you may be emotional and angry following an accident, you must remember the importance of calling for medical attention after an accident. Ensuring everyone's safety also includes moving your vehicles to safe places. Many parking lots have streams of pedestrians and vehicles moving up and down them. Be sure to avoid any other mishaps by moving your car out of the way. Call the Police Calling the police is standard practice for accidents on the road, and the same applies to parking lot accidents. Some people suggest proceeding after an accident without involving the police. S. Burke Law does not suggest this course of action. Calling the police after any accident is important for a variety of reasons. If you or one of your passengers suffer injuries, calling the police is important because it documents the cause of the accident. The police write up an official report after your accident. The report documents the time and place of the accident. It also documents each party’s account of the accident and includes any witness statements. All of this information helps a potential personal injury claim. Exchange Personal Information Once the police arrive on the scene and document everything, you should exchange contact information. To be safe, S. Burke Law recommends collecting the following: • Driver’s license number • Address • Name of the driver and passengers • Phone numbers • License plate number • Insurance information In addition to exchanging personal information with the other party in the accident, you should also seek out any witnesses. They may provide testimonies which could benefit your case. Exchanging information with them could be helpful as well. Take Photos of the Accident Once you check on everyone and call the police, it is a smart idea to take photos of the scene. Photos help corroborate your account of the accident as well as the accounts of witnesses, and more information never hurts. We suggest trying to grab the following photos of the following: • Scratches and other damage to your vehicle • Property damage • Skid marks Contact Your Insurance Company No matter how minor it may appear to be, it is important to call your insurance company after an accident. The first reason is that most companies require you to report even minor accidents. If you do not, it is possible they could deny your claim if you attempt one too long after the incident. The second reason is that, as said above, it begins establishing your case. Establishing the accident early and documenting the damage and injuries helps you in the short and the long run, particularly if you consider hiring an attorney and going through the stages of filing a personal injury claim. Call an Atlanta Personal Injury Attorney Accidents happen every day, and your primary concerns are getting your health, medical expenses, and vehicle damages in order. In addition to those thoughts swirling around in your head, you might also be wondering if you should consider hiring a personal injury attorney. One of the reasons many people hesitate when hiring personal injury attorneys is the cost, particularly if they are unsure of the strength of their case, but that is why S. Burke Law offers free consultations. Our firm encourages Atlanta natives to reach out to us with no obligation for representation. Our primary concern is guiding you through the process, so you can make an informed decision. If you decide to work with us, we promise to represent you to the best of our abilities. Call S. Suicide Rates Increased In Japan During The Pandemic What does this mean for the rest of the world? This pandemic has led to massive lay-offs and shutdowns. Our lives as we knew it were interrupted and possibly changed forever. No one taught us how to cope during a pandemic. We are in unusual times and everyone is looking for answers. When will it be over? Will the vaccine be effective? What are the best ways to stay safe? What to do when you are told that the company you work for will no longer be in business? One thing we all quickly learned while living here in America is that the world may slow down but it doesn’t ever really stop. Capitalism doesn’t take time off during pandemics. Bills still have to be paid, food still has to be purchased, and people still have to work. We are still expected to “make a living”. What happens when you are let go and displaced but rent is still due on the first? These are the harsh realities we are facing. According to reports, there has been a substantial increase in suicides among women in Japan. “The biggest reason is women are losing work and don’t know how to support themselves and their families.” People are having a very hard time coping with the abrupt changes that have come as a result of COVID-19. We are in the midst of a recession, there’s an emerging job crisis happening, and lay offs are becoming more and more common. Job industries are transforming, some job roles won't return to the market. All of this can be pretty scary, leaving most of us feeling uncertain. People are rightfully concerned but how can you stay mentally strong during this pandemic? Here are a few tips to consider: Establish “new normals” or routines within your life. Many of us have had to involuntarily make adjustments to our lives which may mean that the “old” way of doing things may no longer work. Try not to resist changing and shifting into new routines for yourself. This could potentially help you regain some stability in your life. Have ways to express and release. Create safe spaces for you to process your thoughts and feelings. Engage in practices like journaling and do activities that are grounding and calming like yoga, going for a walk, or taking time for deep meditative breaths. Anxiety may be high right now, doing things that calm your nervous system will be of great benefit. If your job or profession has been compromised, there will be initial shock but try not to let that take you down a dark rabbit hole. Turn it into an opportunity to explore what the future may hold for you. Maybe you've been wanting to switch jobs/professions anyway? Maybe this frees up time to be spent more with family? Maybe this is your chance to do a little market research to see what new jobs, professions, and companies may be popping up as a result of all the changes? Whatever you choose to do, the point is to take this time to prepare yourself. The future you will thank you. We don’t know when things will officially be back stable within our society but it’s important for us to focus on the things we can control. Taking care of ourselves mentally, emotionally and physically, is more important now than ever. We can get through this.
Did you know that there are currently 1.34 million lawyers in the United States?
The Benefits of a Structured Settlement Once a personal injury plaintiff settles or wins their case, they may need to decide how to receive their compensation. Two common options are a lump-sum payment or a structured settlement, which is a series of payments over a period of time. With a structured settlement, the defendant (or their insurance company) typically transfers the amount owed in the settlement/verdict to a third-party administrator, who disburses the funds to the plaintiff according to the agreed-upon terms. Plaintiffs have the flexibility to choose the payment amounts, the frequency of payments, and how long payments will continue. For instance, a plaintiff can request a large initial payment to handle pending bills, then receive smaller amounts after that, or opt for smaller payments initially and larger ones down the road. An allowance for additional payment amounts can be made for extraordinary expenses, such as a child’s college tuition. Some plaintiffs choose to delay payouts until they reach retirement. Advantages of a structured settlement include lowering the risk of spending money too quickly or lavishly; avoiding the hassle and complexities of managing a large sum of money; and having the assurance of future income. Drawbacks of structured settlements include a plaintiff’s inability to alter the terms of the settlement if their circumstances change, and inability to make their money grow until they have it in hand. Structured-settlement payments are generally not taxable, but earnings made from investments of that money typically would be. In many instances, structured settlements make the most sense for large settlements. Our office can help you determine if a structured settlement best suits your situation and make recommendations on its details.

Target 1 #SayHerName Campaign https://www.sburkelaw.com/video/target%2D1%2Dsayhername%2Dcampaign%2Ecfm The Say Her Name campaign was officially launched in 2014 by the African American Policy Forum and Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy at Columbia Law School. The campaign was created as a response to police violence against black girls and women. So often, they are overlooked and their stories never told. Here, at the Law Offices of Sheryl Burke, we are saying their names with art. We recently installed a piece titled Target 1, created by artist Corrina Sephora. The plaque lists the names of 101 women whose lives were unlawfully stolen and taken by racist police violence. We are also committed to updating this plaque as needed. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to update it at all. We honor every single last one of these women by bringing awareness in their name. #SayHerName Target 1 #SayHerName Campaign

The Newest App On The Block: ClubHouse ClubHouse is the latest app to snatch our attention by giving us a nostalgic chatroom like experience. Setting a tone of exclusivity seems to be a marketing tactic that just may be working. It has piqued the interest of many, especially those who have yet to be invited onto the app. While the audio chat app is in beta, the only way to gain access is by reserving a username and waiting to be invited in by someone already inside. Once a part of the “in crowd”, you can create or enter different rooms as a moderator, speaker, or listener/observer. Some of the rooms’ conversational topics include: table reads for popular shows, investing in real estate, raising VC money, politics, morning prayers and chants, happy hours, virtual dinner parties, listening parties, and basically any type of discussion panel you can think of. New rooms are constantly being added and while still exclusive, the community is growing! Making its first appearance in the earlier part of the year, and initially being a techie venture capitalist gathering hub, it has since evolved into a space for content creators from various industries to connect, network, and exchange thoughts and ideas. Within the past few months, the app has definitely grown in popularity. Think hottest club on the scene on a Saturday night with a line wrapped around the building. Welcome to the Clubhouse! Clubhouse could possibly become the platform that disrupts social media as we know it. Social media platforms don’t really feel all that connecting these days with all the filters and highlight reels. However, Clubhouse’s secret weapon seems to be its ability to connect people, at least for now. Only time will tell what becomes of it. New updates are announced often while the app is still in development but here are 7 tips for navigation (for those who are invited in): Set an intention for using the app. Ask yourself “why” you are there and what you are looking to get out of it-- if you desire to make the most out of the experience. Add value to every conversation and try to mention points that have not been already made once you get the opportunity to speak. Just being a listener and learner is okay. Try to keep your “monologues” to under 2 minutes. It’s okay to process and digest the app at your own pace. Utilize the search bar. It is your bestfriend for searching for specific topics and keywords. It’s okay if you are not there to do business.
The Celebration of a King Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was the embodiment of what could happen when you have faith, take action, and make an impact. He used his voice and his convictions to push for the significant change we so desperately needed within society. Dr. King started a movement that forged a path we still have access to today. As we celebrate this courageous man of faith and principle, let us be reminded of our own ability to dream. May his legacy encourage you to create your own. If you take nothing else from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's story, take note of the possibility that you too, can make a difference. So many of us move through life quietly, playing it small. Let this be a reminder to live out loud. The best way to honor Dr. King is to find and use your own voice, stand for what you believe in, and spread genuine love. The dream lives on as we continue to move forward as a community of dreamers. Dr. King found something he could believe in and took off in its direction. What do you believe in? What are your dreams? What’s keeping you from actualizing them? Let’s celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this year, by following at least one of the dreams we have been holding near and dear to our own hearts. Give yourself permission to take a step in the direction of the things you say you want to do and accomplish. Make Dr. King proud. Happy MLK Day!

Amanda Gorman It all started with a poem. Amanda Gorman stole the show at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ Inauguration ceremony with her poem titled, “The Hill We Climb”. Gorman captured the hearts and attention of many with her powerful words. She spoke with such eloquence, compassion and conviction. Gorman’s words humanized everyone who had a listening ear. Since her inauguration appearance, the 2017 first National youth poet Laureate has had a few more life changing moments. “Her three upcoming books shot to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list and the NFL announced plans for her to recite an original poem at Super Bowl LV.” She also recently did a remote interview with Michelle Obama for the New York Times. All eyes are on this rising star as she continues to use her voice and her words to speak truth into the light of existence. We are looking forward to seeing what the bright and brilliant Amanda Gorman does next. She’s definitely a part of a generation that will lead us forward into a new chapter. In the words of Gorman, “We will not march back to what was but move to what should be.” If you missed Gorman’s poem recital during the inauguration, you can Google her name or “The Hill We Climb” for the video.

Credit Card Debt Options If credit card debt has you stuck in a financial hole, there are solutions at your disposal. First, take an in-depth look at your finances. Reduce spending where possible, take on a second job if necessary, and pay down your debt over time. It requires dedication, but it’s well worth the effort. However, if your income simply can’t keep up with debt, you may have to consider alternatives. Debt management plans involve a third party—usually a nonprofit credit counseling company or a for-profit debt management company—that reviews your financial particulars and negotiates with credit card companies on interest rates, and sometimes balances. A single monthly payment is made to the third party, which distributes the funds for you. Make sure you thoroughly understand the fee arrangements. Negotiate with credit card companies. You may be able to slash interest rates or significantly lower your total balances, especially if you pay off a renegotiated balance with a lump sum. Up-front cash speaks volumes. Debt stacking may help when you owe money on several fronts. Focus on the smallest card debt and send the minimum payments on the other cards. When you pay off the first card, the amount you had been paying now goes to the next lowest card each month, and so on. Filing for bankruptcy can enable you to reduce, eliminate, and/or restructure your debt. It’s a more complex form of debt relief, but it can produce positive results in a more definitive fashion. If you find yourself in a financial bind with credit card companies, a debt relief attorney may be able to help.

Happy Women’s Day On March 8th, we celebrate women! International Women’s Day is about celebrating women’s cultural, social, political, and economic achievements. It’s also a call for gender equality. We acknowledge and celebrate this day to recognize and honor the countless women throughout history and the women within our very own lives who have sacrificed, overcome adversity, beat the odds, and forged their paths to opportunities and success. On Women’s Day, we shine a light on women around the world who have chosen to use their voices, step outside of patriarchal constructs, and fight for their rights and the rights of other women. This year’s theme is about choosing to challenge gender bias and inequality. Those who would like to support and take part in the #ChoosetoChallenge Campaign can take a photo of your best “choose to challenge” pose and share it across your social media platforms using the hashtags: #ChooseToChallenge and #IWD2021 Visit www.internationalwomensday.com for more information. Another way to show solidarity is to support women in and around your community this month. This support can be in the form of patronizing women-owned businesses, amplifying a woman’s voice on your platform, or uplifting a woman in your life by letting her know how much you appreciate and value her. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure that it’s genuine and heartfelt. Happy International Women’s Day! INTERNATIONALWOMENSDAY.COM International Women's Day 2021 theme: Choose to Challenge

Improving the Odds for Teen Drivers Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among American teenagers. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, in 2018 almost 2,500 teens in the United States aged 13–19 were killed, and about 285,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. The fatality rate for young males involved in auto accidents was almost twice that of their female counterparts. Factors involved in heightening teenagers’ susceptibility to auto collisions include, but are not limited to, the following: • Teens are more likely to speed than older drivers and not allow for the proper following distance. • Young drivers tend to underestimate dangerous situations or fail to recognize them at all more so than older drivers, which points to their inexperience and/or distracted driving—also more of a problem with young drivers (ages 16–20) than other age groups. • Alcohol elevates the risk of accidents for all age groups, but in a disproportionate way for young drivers. • The level of seat-belt usage is lower for teenage drivers. Many auto accident fatalities and injuries can be avoided. Parents can help by setting a good example; being dutiful driving teachers and exposing their kids to a wide variety of driving situations; restricting nighttime driving (for at least the first six months); hammering home the importance of seat belts; emphasizing the consequences of distracted driving and limiting the number of passengers to one (if any) until they’re more experienced; and instituting a zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident due to the fault of another, contact an auto accident attorney to safeguard your rights.

Personal injury law is more than car accidents. Personal injury law applies to any instance in which a person suffers harm due to the negligence of another individual or entity. Do you have a case we should hear?
The best time to seek out legal representation is as soon as you think you need it. Waiting could cost you in more ways than one.
