Today, we’d like to recognize Roger Allard, our service appointment coordinator at Lee Auto Mall Westbrook. At the age of 20, Roger volunteered for the Marine Corps Reserve, where he spent five years. Roger trained in Millington, Tenn., and successfully completed the Marines’ arduous 13-week boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., something only 35 members of his 80-member class were able to do. He was proud to celebrate his graduation with his stepfather, a career Marine who encouraged him to join up. “The thing I remember most is the camaraderie you build up,” Roger says. “We were a close-knit family and I still clearly remember the faces of those people in my platoon.” These days Roger serves a vital role at Lee, helping customers schedule service appointments and keeping traffic flowing through the shop. Thank you for all you do, Roger, and thank you for your service in the Marine Corps Reserve

Today we honor Phil Curry, a U.S. Army veteran who spent two years stationed in North Pole, Alaska. Phil was a ‘missileer,’ part of the first line of U.S. missile defense at the height of the Cold War. And it was definitely cold for Phil: the temperature the day he arrived at his duty station was 50 below! Phil has worked for Lee for many years, and was Shep Lee’s personal driver and friend. These days he is retired but remains with Lee as a delivery driver based out of Saco. Phil, thank you for your service and for being an important part of the Lee family!

Today we salute LeeCars Norway’s John Westleigh, who served four years in the U.S. Army and another six years in the Army Reserves. John spent his active duty as a supply sergeant stationed in Panama in the late 80s while tensions with Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega were on the rise. John left the Army in 1989 as a specialist E-4(Promotable) filling a designated E-6 position and received an Army Accommodation Medal. Today, John is one of the top Lee Credit Express sales pros, helping customers at LeeCars Norway. And as you can see from the photo, in his spare time he’s a champion powerlifter! Thank you very much for your service, John, and thanks for all the ‘heavy lifting’ you do for your customers in Norway!

Today we salute Harold Adams, who joined the Army fresh out of high school in 1965. Harold was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, and served as a radar operator at an Army missile site. Today, we salute U.S. Army veteran Mark Van Valkenburgh, who served as a tank crewman from 1967 to 1970. Mark was stationed in the Korean DMZ for 19 months, where his unit guarded the border between North and South Korea to keep hostilities from re-igniting. Mark entered the Army as a 17-year-old and reached the rank of sergeant before his enlistment ended. “I grew up,” Mark says. “I went in as a kid and came out an adult.” These days, Mark helps Lee out as a delivery driver at Lee Auto Mall in Auburn. Today we salute Tom White, our longtime service manager at LeeCars Norway. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy when his draft number came up. He was assigned to the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Navy Seabees, and was trained as a construction mechanic in Oxnard, Calif. His first posting was at Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean. “It was like a Gilligan’s Island kind of thing back then,” Tom says. Later, Tom was stationed on Guam, where he helped construct tent cities to house Vietnamese who fled the fall of Saigon. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” Tom says of his Navy days. “I come from a military family and I’m a firm believer in this country and in doing my part.” Tom does more than his part for Lee, calmly managing one of the busiest shops around and always earning the trust of his customers and employees every day. Thank you for your service, Tom!

Today we salute Ken Winer of LeeCars Norway. A Boston native, Ken joined the Air Force in 1965 and served for 11 years, including six years of service in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He began his service as a Morse code interceptor and left with a rank of Tech Sergeant (E6). After Vietnam, Ken spent some time in Okinawa before his final assignment back stateside at Maine’s Loring Air Force Base. Ken joined Lee after retiring from construction in 2011, and he’s been LeeCars Norway’s detailing expert for the past eight years. Looking back on his service during Vietnam, Ken considers himself fortunate to have returned home and not suffered from the post-traumatic stress that afflicted other War veterans. “I was one of the lucky one, for sure,” Ken says. “I enjoyed the military, it was a very good thing for me and it straightened my act up.” Ken, thank you for serving your country. We’re proud to have you as a member of the Lee team!

Today we salute Bob Violette, a delivery driver at Lee Auto Mall Auburn. As a 19-year-old, Bob enlisted in the Navy and became a boatswain’s mate aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier. During his tenure, the Ranger was deployed to the Tonkin Gulf and conducted flight operations in support of U.S. troops in Vietnam. Bob excelled and was eligible the rank of Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class as his tour was ending (“I didn’t have time to sew it on,” he says). Bob is proud to have served his country and grateful for the chance the Navy gave him to see the world. “I got to meet people I never would have met and I made some really close friends. We all watched each other’s backs.” Lee is grateful to have Bob as part of our delivery team in Auburn. Thank you for your service, Bob!

Today we salute U.S. Navy and Vietnam War veteran Willis White Jr., who now works as a part-time driver for Lee Credit Now in Ellsworth. Willis enlisted in 1966 at the age of 18 and completed Naval boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. “I guess I scored high on the first aid part of our basic training,” Willis says, because he was designated a hospital corpsman and assigned to a surgical ward at Naval Hospital Boston. But with the Vietnam War escalating, Willis was sent to Camp Lejeune, N.C., to attend field medical school with the Marines. “It was like going to boot camp all over again,” Willis says. Then it was off to Vietnam for a one-year deployment that included six months on the front. “It was an eye-opening experience for an 18-year-old,” Willis said. “I felt I’d done my duty to the country, I don’t ever regret it.” Willis completed his service in 1970 and returned to Maine, where he worked for the Linnehan group before Lee purchased the dealership group in 2011. He’s worn many hats during his 50+ years with the company and we can’t thank him enough for all he’s done for Lee. Thank you for your brave service to our country, Willis!

Today we salute Eric Ferguson, who at 21 joined the Maine Army National Guard in South Portland. Three years later, Eric opted for active duty and was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood in the Missouri Ozarks, where he served four years as a heavy equipment instructor. Eric attained the rank of sergeant (E5) and loved the discipline and the opportunities for leadership the Army provided, but he was forced to separate due to an injury suffered during a training exercise. “I loved it, I’d still be in if I could,” he says. We’re very glad to have Eric at Lee, where he has become a valued service advisor at Lee Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram in Westbrook. Thank you for your service, Eric!

Today we salute Mark Simpson, a former U.S. Marine and a Gulf War veteran. Mark entered the Marines the day after he graduated high school in 1994, and he spent two years assigned to a FAST Company, an elite Marine anti-terrorism security team. Mark was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Bahrain and was known for his marksmanship, testing ‘expert’ on multiple firearms despite never having used one before. His time in the Corps was challenging and exciting, but Mark was happy to return stateside after his four-year commitment was over. “You really get a view of the world, you see that most people don’t have it as good as we do,” Mark says. Today, Mark is a valued asset to the Lee team as a sales consultant at LeeCars Saco. Mark, we’re proud to have you on our team and we thank you for bravely serving our country!

Lee Auto Malls will have lunches delivered to ICU and ER staff at four Maine hospitals: St. Joseph Healthcare in Bangor; Maine Medical Center in Portland; St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston; and Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. The pandemic has changed all our lives, but it has been particularly hard on health care providers. We just want them to know how much we appreciate everything we do. We love that we have been able to help and support these local heroes and keep them in peoples minds during these difficult times.

Working with local area restaurants, Lee Auto Malls has been providing lunches to local areas hospitals throughout January and February. We are incredibly grateful to our partners who have created and delivered the lunches to our front line healthcare workers during these incredibly challenging times:
Amato's, Sam's Italian Restaurant, Otto's Pizzeria, Hero's Sports Bar and Grill, Rivalries, Bagel Central, Beth's Diner, Levis Meat and Deli Corner, and Dock's Seafood.

In January and February of this year Lee has been providing lunches for our front line health care workers at local area hospitals and medical centers. The response has been incredible. We love that we have been able to help and support these local heroes and keep them in peoples minds during these difficult times.
Lee Auto Mall will continue to provide lunches in March with a goal of having provided over 2500 by the end of the month.
