Most people don’t know much about building the walls inside a shower.
It seems like every tile professional I meet has a different preferred method and no one can agree on what’s best.
Most everyone agrees that green board is out of the question, if you’re still ok with drywall in your shower it’s time to up your game.
On the opposite end of this conversation some of the top tile men I know swear by the ease of installation of foam board. Others seem intimidated by the newness of that product, probably from a lack of education.
We’ve tried them all. (Except the green board, that’s amateur hour.) I prefer Hardibacker fiber cement boards with a water proofing agent myself.
It’s a tried and true method that lasts forever. Yes, it’s a bit more effort and the sheets are heavier but it feels more sturdy to me than foam.
The other thing about foam is the cost. It’s a dramatically different price point and makes for a more expensive install, which seems silly to me when, in my opinion, a cheaper alternative will perform just as well.
A lot of guys will argue with me about taking an easier path, or Red Guard sucks, or whatever.
But I’ll always prefer what I know will work and protect my clients home.
I once built a shower in my house with fiber cement and Red Guard and didn’t get around to the tile for several months. We used that shower like that without a single incident, a true test to the effectiveness of my method and those products.

Tile Backer Board Breakdown which one is best for showers | DIYTileGuy
We met at one of the local home and garden shows last winter.
We navigated COVID and worked out a design via video. Kelsey produced a rendering that everyone was really excited about.
Our client loved it. We all seemed to vibe really well, they said, “let’s do this.”
Laurel got our partners on board and started organizing the logistics.
We had a design.
We had a timeline.
We had a budget.
We had a plan.
And then we executed.
Over 30 days.
As a team.
I’m so happy for my clients to have experienced a successful remodel instead of the horror stories people tell about contractors.
The experience is paramount to my process. I don’t need to convince you with cheap talk of ‘quality this’ and ‘professional that’ - I use a system that can guarantee a smooth and painless transition. We put in the work on the front end to ensure it.
I won’t do it any other way.

The day the appliances came.
I’m so close to wrap by this point.
The appliances are among the very last things to arrive and as they show up we start to get really excited because we can start to see a kitchen.
That’s Laurel, she’s cleaning the interior of that cabinet and installing shelves. That one was last while we waited for the glass company to fit the doors.
Laurel is my Project Manager. She makes sure the client’s experience our remodels the way we intend them to: pleasantly and painlessly.
She also takes care of our trade partners, we want them to have a great experience working with us too. I like to think of her as a full time concierge... #legend #purpose #customcabinetry #kitchenremodel #remodeling #designbuildremodel

BEFORE.
It was dark, small and dated.
Under utilized space.
The double oven crammed next to the fridge, the cook top taking up most of the island surface...no, this kitchen was all wrong for my client.
Not only does she need it beautiful, she needed loads of light, lots more storage, a usable island and more room to spread out. She needs her kitchen to do work. And something had to be done about the massive dog kennel sitting in the floor.
So, we sat down and discussed her wants and needs and designed her a space with the form and function she was craving from her kitchen.
I made it about her.
We even planned a space within the cabinets to house Woody’s kennel.
She loved it.
And then we built it.
Woody seems to approve too.

What our clients say...
This was an exceptional design in a turn of the century home. It was a pleasure to work on, this family really needed a bigger kitchen.
.
We don’t always end up building the projects we have the pleasure of designing. In this case, COVID and scheduling ended in the way and we wouldn’t have been able to meet a timeline.
.
Either way, a kitchen was remodeled and to better serve its family and I’m pleased to hear yet another compliment about how our process really helps people change their reality.
When your client text’s you on the weekend enjoying the fruits of your labor...I love what we do.
This is Woody sharing a smile of approval for the Dutch door, no doubt enjoying the smells while Mama prepares something phenomenal in her new kitchen.
Remember the doggy crate we built into the cabinet configuration?
Yeah, Woody had a say in the design...
We’re all dog people here, so we’re all for it! Happy Saturday, friends!
