Lunges are great to build strength in the upper legs specifically the quads and glutes. Lunges are also great because they help train your balance since it’s a single leg exercise

Lunges can be done in any lower body workout whether it’s HIIT training, strength training or even as cardio training

Start off with just your body weight, holding on to something for balance if needed and work your way up to using weights and even plyometrics

Most of you know coach Sean as the guy on the left, but just a few years ago he was overweight and unmotivated. After awhile he got tired of being out of shape and overweight. Once he started changing his daily habits of exercising differently and eating healthier that’s when he became more motivated. After about 3 years of staying consistent he was able to drop almost 30 lbs.

These are the things Delco Fit is made of. Times change, routines disrupted, and hopes shaken, the only constant in life is change.
The true measure of health is not how we faulted but how quickly we recover. Its mental health Monday and you may still be adjusting to the changes but you have a whole week in front of you. Make a plan now, emphasize not what you wish you were doing but what you’re going to do to move forward in the face of challenges and adversity. With courage, resolve, and the ability to adapt you can still reach your goals.

You can ABSOLUTELY accomplish any goal you have all alone. You are that amazing.
But hot dang, isn't it incredible to have a support system behind you. To have that driving force pushing you when you cant do it yourself?
So here is my Wisdom Wednesday. Surround yourself with people who encourage you. Who push you. Who love you enough to push you to be more. Do more. Be better. Because YOUU! are capable of so. much. more.

But, just because we’re lost in the time warp, doesn’t mean you can’t start focusing on your fitness goals NOW!
Why wait until the new year? Let’s be honest, most of us have been “off track” MOST of 2020.
So let’s finish the year with a bang. Start with small changes. Figure out and write down what your goals are. Make a plan of action. Take a walk tomorrow. Swap out a leftover (probably stale) Christmas cookie for some fruit.

So today I want to remind you to control what you can. To embrace happiness and health on your own terms.
If all you can manage today is to take a walk around the block unplugged from the media? YOU ARE WINNING.
Your health- physical and mental- are so important right now. There are no right or wrong ways to cope with the world we’re in.
But prioritizing yourself and your health and happiness is something YOU alone can control.
One day at a time. One breath at a time.

As we all are preparing for our New Year’s Eve celebrations let’s take a minute for reflection.
I’m sure many people are actually more celebrating the end of 2020 than they are welcoming 2021. Or maybe it is both.
But hear me out.
2020 sucked on a lot of levels.
But did it not also teach you invaluable lessons about yourself?
How many of you have always wished to be independently wealthy so you didn’t have to go to work? And now that you have been forced to stay home for almost a year wish you could leave your house?
Who thought they’d never be able to workout at home and realized it fits your schedule perfectly?
How many of us under appreciated our time surrounded by family and friends? Who dreaded going to functions?
Instead of replaying the horrible times of this past year, let’s look to 2021 and think of all of the times we persevered. When we overcame the impossible. The year we survived?
Survival is a huge accomplishment. So if you also thrived then tap yourself on the back!
Let’s take the strength we found within ourselves this year and apply it to 2021. Who the heck knows what you can achieve!

I know for many of us 2020 was a year that we would like to forget. But for me 2020 was also the year that I decided to make my health a priority. And I am proud to say that in the year between these two photos I am down 40+ pounds.
Growing up I had always been very active . My parents let us try any sport that might interest us and in high school I was a three sport athlete. Even when I went to college and stopped playing sports I still tried to remain active. Things started to change in 2013 when I changed jobs and was now just sitting behind a desk all day. In just a few short months I gained 25 pounds. From here it seemed that no matter what I did I kept gaining weight . This continued for several years until I was eventually up 65 pounds from where I had been just a few years earlier.
I can still remember Halloween of 2019 when my husband insisted that we wear matching costumes from Stranger Things . When I had tried the costume on in the store I did not pay much attention to it and quickly told my husband that it was fine. But then came Halloween night and when I put on the costume again I felt uncomfortable. I felt as though it was highlighting my every flaw . It took a lot of insisting from my husband that I looked fine and that no one would care what I looked like in the costume for me to leave the house that night.
Surprisingly that night was not a turning point for me. I still continued to only workout occasionally and did not pay any attention to the food that I was putting in my body . It was not until March of 2020 that my turning point came. I was on a job interview and the woman I was meeting with very bluntly asked me: “ How is someone your size actually successful as a personal trainer ? Do clients actually listen to you or no because of how you look? I would not listen to a trainer that is a big as you are. “ I was in utter shock that someone would ask that, especially in a job interview.
On my drive home from the interview I was upset with what had transpired but it did get me thinking . If I want others to believe in me and follow what I am preaching to them, then I need to lead by example. That was when I decided for good that my health needed to be a priority. Since that day I now make sure that I do not go more than two days in a row without doing some sort of workout and I have been more mindful about the foods that I use to fuel my body. Of course there have been days were I do not want to workout or where I want to pig out on junk food and candy , yes that stuff is unfortunately still in my house because my husband could care less about eating healthy. But I remind myself why my health needs to be a priority. I need to be the best version of me that I can be.

Did you know that people are less likely to skip days or cheat on their meal plan when they have someone doing it with them?
Do you struggle to keep to your routine or eating habits when you’re surrounded by people who aren’t working toward the same goals as you? That is NORMAL! When everyone around you is indulging or pressuring you it is hard!

But for some of us. It does! One meal, one slip up can send us into a downward spiral. One brownie turns into a brownie with ice cream and fudge. One pizza turns into pizza and wings and beers with the boys. ONE meal can disrupt your entire plan!
Having friends and family who are working just as hard and sacrificing just as much as you, leads to better chances of success. Surround yourself with people who share bigger goals, better lives and yours too will be enriched.

When we start a new exercise or nutrition plan we want INSTANTANEOUS results! It is what we are used to when we really want something, wouldn't it be great to just Amazon Prime your exercise and nutrition?!?
Unfortunately, it takes time and patience in order to see the CHANGE! So when all else fails, be kind to yourself. So, you worked out 5 days and ate 100% on point but the scale didn't budge, think of where you started and how at one point you would have laughed about exercising at all.
Remember, our journey is a marathon, not a sprint! Be patient =)

This one is a little different.
It isn’t about a single person who has changed.
But our world as a whole. The pandemic hit, and has anyone truly “recovered”?
Will gyms ever feel safe again? Family gatherings? Restaurants?
But here’s the thing. One of your best defenses against any virus, illness, mental struggle is.... physical activity!
Working out is the most underutilized therapy.
Getting regular exercise will help protect your immune system.. boost endorphins to keep your mental health in check.. and keep your body ready to fight everything that comes at it!
So while gyms and community look different, your health should still be a priority.

You can exercise as much as you want but if you are not fueling your body appropriately, you are wasting all the hard work you put in at the gym!!
Fuel your body the way it deserves, fill up on lean meats, veggies, fruit, and healthy fats, eliminate foods high in sugar and overly processed.
You don't expect your car to run if you don't fuel it properly, why do you expect your body to perform if you are not giving it the BEST possible fuel!
A great exercise routine coupled with a healthy diet will make you feel amazing!

✅keep abs, low back and core right
✅keep front foot on the ground, knee can track past toes
✅Bend front knee as much as possible while keeping back foot balanced

Meet Cary! Cary is one our amazing newtown square members!
Cary had tried endless gyms. Endless diets. Always loved working out but couldn’t find the one to give her real results. I’m sure you can relate. Here’s what she says about Legion Delco!
“I had tried many other gyms before becuase i do like to work out but i didnt love any of them!! When i tried Legion Seans class was great. It was what my body type needed. so i started going 3-5 times a week because i was heavy and that is all i could do. in 2 weeks i lost 7 pounds!! so i got really motivated and kept going.. the coaches that you have are amazing and push us hard. they truly know when and how heavy each of us can lift and can do and I loved that.. the more i kept going the better results i keep getting. i am more than amazed of what i can do with my body. I am 39 years old and i know i still have some way to go but i am enjoying every day of my journey and i will get there”
Cary is a Wedding and Events coordinator for a local venue. She is busy. And works non stop especially during peak seasons. It would’ve been so easy for her to skip the gym or slack on her nutrition.

Tuesday’s at Legion mean one thing, Legs! But today we’re going to go over Shoulders!
•

In the pictures above coach Sean is demonstrating how to do front and lateral shoulder raises. Front and lateral (or side raises) are great to isolate the anterior/front delts and the medial/side delts. Front and side raises can be done in many different variations but the universal way is using DBs raising the weights straight forward to isolate the front delts and laterally to isolate the side delts.

Things to remember when performing the Front and Side Raises:
✅keep good upright posture in the chest and shoulders
✅have a firm grip on the dumbbells
✅Slightly bend elbows when raises weights front and laterally

Things to avoid:
❌using momentum and swinging weights forward/laterally

❌lifting weights too far past shoulder height, both forward and sideways

Shoutout Motivation Monday!!! Today we want to highlight a member that has been kicking butt the last 3 plus months… Brianna!
Now the key to Brianna’s success is that she is working smarter by syncing up her nutrition and her workouts to allow them to work together to accomplish her goals!
A lot of times our nutrition and our workouts exist separately in our day to day routines, so it’s no wonder that a lot of times they can work against each other and slow down your progress towards your long term goals
Let me give you an example… let’s say I am trying to lose weight (and lets be honest, who’s not!?). It might seem super easy to identify the workout strategy and nutrition strategy that will help you accomplish that goal right?
Workout MORE - burn more calories
AND
Eat LESS - consume less calories
WRONG!!!
This strategy may work in the short-term but will lead you to continually working out longer and continually eating less when your results stall out!
So lets work SMARTER like Brianna here and put together a nutrition plan that takes into consideration how you workout so we can THRIVE!

Motivation can be fleeting, especially as we deal with overcast skies and snow storms that mess up "our routine."
One of our member's walked into the gym the other day and said, "I don't want to be here!"
Her son encouraged her to "just skip the gym, it's only one day." But in her mind, one day turns into two, which turns into three, and then turns into months before you know it.
So she did the HARDEST thing to do, she forced herself to come to the gym, even though she wasn't feeling it.
In order to succeed, you need to PUSH YOURSELF, even when you just aren't feeling it. In fact, that is the time that you need to push yourself MORE.
If you only did laundry when you felt like it, you would be wearing dirty clothes everyday!
If you only exercise and follow your nutrition plan when you feel like it, will you ever make any progress???

On this weeks episode of technique Tuesday, we’re going over lateral lunges!
Lateral lunges help develop balance and stability. They also help with hip flexibility as well!
They also take some pressure off of your knees if you have any knee injuries/issues, as opposed to forward or reverse lunges.

Technique Tuesday
This week coach Kellie walks you through the Push Press!
This exercise is a great way to strengthen your shoulders and core! With a big exhale as you push up, you tighten your core and use your entire body to get the weights overhead!
This exercise should utilize a weight that is normally too heavy for you to press overhead from a standard military press position!
Try a few sets of 8-10 reps with a weight sightly heavier than your normal shoulder press! Let us know how those shoulders are feeling the next day 🥰

Jennifer Barlow-Phillips has been one of our most resilient members. She has been a member for almost 5 years now and has overcome some pretty amazing obstacles. She has recovered from both ankle and wrist injuries but more notably West Nile Virus a few years ago.

Transformation Thursday!!!
We talk a lot about accountability here at Legion and what better person to keep you accountable that your significant other! Taylor Lynne Miller and @AnthonyFry have been pushing and keeping each other accountable to the tune of more than 30lbs lost between the two of them since they started their challenges!
We are so happy to highlight their amazing work and transformations! We cannot wait to see what else they will accomplish together!
WEDNESDAY WISDOM!
We all like to set "goals", but too many times our goal is a long term goal which can be hard to attain and we lose our "spark" to keep going and get discouraged!
Instead of giving up, make small goals that are attainable and it will help keep you going!!
You may want to lose 25 pounds, make that goal 5 pounds at a time, the small victories will keep you going!!!
When we make huge goals, we set ourselves up for huge disappointments.
After 4 grueling weeks, Legion Springfield is STILL dominating the leaderboard!! There have been some shifts to the leader board this week with a NEVER BEFORE TEAM now ranked in the top 5!! With 2 weeks left, it is anyone's game!
A special shout out to Who W.B at Springfield, and The team that still has no name at NSQ for almost making the leaderboard!

MONDAY MOTIVATION!!!!!
Stop canceling on yourself! It is hard to get up early when you just want a little more sleep, or it is hard to workout out after a tough day at work and you JUST DON'T HAVE THE MOTIVATION!
Would your boss cancel a meeting if you were tired??? No they wouldn't! Push yourself to power through that workout, the hardest part is usually getting to the gym, not the workout =)
Every workout won't be the greatest workout ever, but doing something is better than doing nothing, PLUS you will be feel so much better once you finish!

Meet Nicole Straz! Nicole joined Legion back in November and has been a regular ever since! After the new year Nicole decided to take her nutrition to the next level by opting in for our Macro Nutrition Coaching and that’s when everything changed.
Nicole is down 20lbs and almost 7% body fat in just the last 6 weeks alone! Her transformation is an incredible testament to her hard work and discipline both crushing 5+ workouts a week, but also tracking everything she is eating so that we can turn her body into a fat burning machine!!!

Week 5 of the Member Challenge is upon us and Legion Delco has been shedding those unwanted pounds and are ready to strut their stuff down the shore this summer.....Jersey has no idea what is headed their way!!!!
Springfield is still dominating the leader board but Springfield as well as NSQ has a combined total loss of almost 543 pounds!!!!
As we enter the last week and final weigh outs, we are so PROUD of all the hard work our members have put in, it is not always easy, but as long as you show up and do your best, that is what matters MOST!!!!

Motivation Monday
The hardest part about any exercise routine isn't the exercises, it's getting started, that holds us all back. You will hear many of us at Legion say, "Something is better than nothing!"
Every workout is not going to be the greatest workout ever, but as long as you are doing something, you are helping yourself!
With the weather getting nicer and it staying lighter out later, go for a walk if you can't make it into the gym that day, don't be a couch potato!!! Your body will thank you =)

Today’s exercise is the band pull apart.
Bands are an awesome and versatile piece of equipment to have on hand. Here Jon shows two different ways to execute the band pull apart to target different areas of your back.

Monday Motivation
Sometimes the hardest part about starting a new fitness routine, or joining a new gym is just starting!
We worry about not being able to keep up, not being able to lift as much, or not being fit enough.
BUT you need to remember, all those people started where you are now, one day you will be the person someone strives to be.
So remember where you started and why you started!
MACROS 101

Here is a quick information video on macros!
Macros are really any food or drink that contains a calorie/calories
The 4 macros are:
-Protein 4cal/gram
-Carbs 4cal/gram
-Fat 9 cal/gram
-alcohol 7cal/gram
Good recommendations for daily intake are 30-50% of your total calories for the day coming from Protein and Carbs, and 20-30% from Fat. Keep alcohol limited and only about 0-10% especially when you’re trying to lose weight and stay or get leaner.

Joy and Patricia Latham are FitFam who are helping to push each other thru their 6 Week Challenges together after each having a long layoff from the gym! They are staples of our afternoon classes and we are so excited to have them back in here and crushing their goals!

Here they are!
Dave and Michelle just won our 6 week member challenge by losing over 14% of their total body weight.
In just 6 weeks Michelle lost 20.6 pounds and Dave lost 33.6 pounds ... IN JUST 6 WEEKS
These two showed such amazing determining throughout this challenge. And of course were rewarded with being healthier and more fit.
But they also won the grand prize of $1650 for being the top couple! Dave and Michelle were so inspired by their fellow members, they decided to pay it forward and donate the $1650 for small businesses to a local sporting good store. C&M Sporting Goods in havertown will provide Legion Delco’s fellow members new and updated equipment. What an amazing way to give back to their community and fit fam!
