School nurses receive COVID-19 vaccine as distribution widens
More than 13,000 Centura Health associates have now received their first COVID-19 vaccinations, and we recently invited more than 9,000 community partners to receive the vaccine in our hospitals, with many more to come in the weeks ahead. Here, OB nurse Robin Johnson receives her first shot at Parker Adventist Hospital. "I'm proud to say I received the Pfizer vaccine the first day it was offered," Robin says. With each dose of vaccine administered, we move closer to an end to this devastating pandemic.
While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. For this reason, we strongly recommend everyone – including people who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – continue to practice safe behaviors such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

"Here's to Dad," Centura Health anesthesiologist Dr. Gregory Fauteux said this week as he received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Fauteux knows the devastation COVID-19 can cause; the virus took his father's life November 22. "One of the true tragedies is that there are over 350,000 people just like him - someone's father, someone's brother, someone's mother, someone's daughter, and we just need to take it seriously."

Doctor who lost his father to COVID-19 receives second dose of vaccine
It's an honor for us to share James' incredible artwork as part of our Healing Arts program at Parker Adventist Hospital, where James underwent emergency spine surgery after a terrible horseback riding accident nearly three years ago. Creating art can be a powerful healing tool for anyone - regardless of your artistic experience or perceived talent.
“I rediscovered the love of making art," James told FOX31 KDVR.com. "That’s where the painting journey began. To be at home, unable to go anywhere, it was a perfect outlet really for me. It was very important to my healing — mentally and emotionally. I can’t imagine what I would’ve done as an alternative, what I was physically capable of doing that would give me so much joy, just to create something, see a result, and be able to share that with other people.”

Emmanuel Rusaka is a problem solver by nature. He works as an IT Service Analyst for Centura Health, where he helps our associates who are having computer trouble. Recently, he decided to help solve a different kind of problem after hearing those he loves express doubt and fear about COVID-19 vaccines.

Two years ago, Justina and Dan Oldehoff gave birth to their first son, Carter. He was just 24 weeks old and weighed only 1.5 pounds. Carter fought hard in our NICU at Littleton Adventist Hospital, but tragically he died four days later.
Justina and Dan turned their experience, and their grief, into something wonderful for other families dealing with premature birth, loss and the NICU journey. On behalf of Carter's Cause, the organization they created in their first son's memory, Justina and Dan donated 250 NICU care packages for current and future families in our NICU care at Littleton Adventist.

As mesmerizing as it is to watch this time-lapse of our mass vaccination clinic in Colorado Springs, we're more in awe of the dozens of caregivers, volunteers, firefighters, EMTs, police officers and others who came out Saturday to help more than 2,300 people get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We're looking forward to repeating the process this Saturday for all those whose appointments were rescheduled because of Sunday's miserable weather conditions.
Surgery is all about precision, and spine surgery patients at our Avista Adventist Hospital can have renewed peace of mind that their procedure is even more precise. Avista Adventist Hospital recently hosted the first procedure in Colorado using new integrated robotic technology to perform more accurate and efficient spine surgery.
Dr. Sharad Rajpal used the technology to help a retired Boulder scientist who was suffering from severe pain that prevented him from walking. He is now home recovering with minimal pain. Dr. Rajpal was one of three surgeons nationwide who became the first to utilize the Mazor Robotic Guidance System with Midas Rex high-speed drills.
“I believe this technology allows surgeons to perform spinal procedures better than we ever have previously by allowing more concise planning and execution in the operating room,” Dr. Rajpal says. “The ability to improve outcomes and safety for our patients is tremendous.”

Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

Do you know what has us feeling the love this Valentine's Day? These sweet, thoughtful notes made by students at The Peak School in Frisco and Altona Middle School in Longmont for our incredible caregivers.
This Valentine's Day is a little sweeter knowing 2,000 educators across our communities received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Saturday. With a special allotment of vaccine from the state, we held educator vaccination clinics at six Centura hospitals yesterday. We're administering more educator doses at clinics early this week as well.
We know vaccinating our teachers helps ensure the promise of an eventual return to normalcy, allowing educators to more quickly get back to the work they love -- providing face-to-face instruction for our young learners. ❤️

It's a feat accomplished through collaboration, determination and a sense of purpose inherent in a mission-driven organization like ours. We know there are many more vaccinations to give in the weeks and months ahead, and we look forward to continuing this life-saving work in our communities. Thank you to each of our incredible caregivers for their dedication, and thank you to our neighbors and fellow community members for entrusting us with this important work.
Providing vaccinations to people across our communities is truly a team effort. One year ago today, we treated the first confirmed COVID-19 patient in the state of Colorado at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco. As we reflect on the past year, we remember how our 21,000 caregivers stepped up in the face of immense challenges to do what they do best - care for our patients and our communities. They extend compassion, hope and healing with every interaction, and they meet each day with courage, perseverance and kindness. While our COVID-19 response continues, we want to take a moment on this one-year anniversary to thank our caregivers for all they have done, and continue to do, for our healing ministry.

Thanks to community support and help from two of our Foundations, our Caregiver Resiliency Program is helping caregivers at St. Anthony Hospital and St. Anthony North Health Campus get some breaks and remember how much you care about them.
“Knowing that there are people thinking of you on the outside, it is kind of helpful to pull you out of what you’re doing a little bit as well," ICU assistant nurse manager Emily Schorstein shared.

COVID In Colorado: Caregivers Receive Help Through Resiliency Program
Earlier this week we celebrated four of our caregivers who were named Colorado Hospital Superheroes by the Colorado Hospital Association for demonstrating courage, a strong moral code, a great sense of responsibility, a fighting spirit and mental toughness to care for their patients and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. But we missed one, and we feel awful for it. Littleton Adventist Hospital Emergency Department Manager Cassi Youngerman is a health care superhero by any definition, and we're honored to have her as part of our Centura team. Here she is being celebrated by her colleagues at Littleton Adventist. Congratulations and well-deserved, Cassi!

The health and safety of our communities is always our top priority. With a major snowstorm predicted for the Front Range beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday, we urge everyone to exercise extreme caution and to consider delaying or canceling any plans that involve travel outside your home. In anticipation of the storm and with the safety of our caregivers and patients in mind, we are proactively rescheduling many of our COVID-19 vaccine clinics. You will receive a separate communication from Centura Health or the vaccine clinic organizer with details if your appointment is impacted. As always, our hospitals will remain open and ready to care for you and your loved ones should the need arise this weekend. Please be safe out there!

There’s work to be done to ensure equity in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in our communities. On Saturday, we teamed up with State Senator Janet Buckner, State Representative Naquetta Ricks HD 40, and COVIDCheck Colorado to hold a pop-up vaccine clinic in an underserved area of Aurora. Sen. Buckner serves on the Colorado Vaccine Equity Taskforce alongside Dr. Oswaldo Grenardo, Centura’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer as well as a family physician at CHPG Cornerstar Primary Care in Aurora. Saturday’s clinic focused on vaccinating community members of color, and we’re grateful for the partnerships that helped make it happen. We look forward to continued strides in this important work.

We're so happy that thousands of El Paso County residents were able to get their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine this weekend at our mass vaccination event with COVIDCheck Colorado. Thanks to all the caregivers and volunteers who make these vaccine clinics a huge success!

Thousands attend mass vaccination clinic at Broadmoor World Arena for their 2nd dose
What an amazing example of whole person care! When an 80-year-old cancer patient at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center missed two recent appointments, her care team noticed and contacted her out of concern for her wellbeing. They learned the patient's water heater had broken and her home's pipes had burst due to the recent extreme cold, leaving her without running water. Social workers at St. Mary-Corwin and Penrose-St. Francis jumped into action, and with generous help from Rampart Supply and Mike's Plumbing & Heating, the water heater and broken pipes were replaced at no cost to the patient. Our incredible caregivers coordinated everything, including the delivery of the new water heater. We are so grateful for each of them!

Today was a big day in our steady march toward Vaccines For All Coloradans. Working with our partners in Pueblo and Governor Jared Polis, we opened the drive-through community COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. We're now operating three of the state's six planned Vaccines for All community clinic sites - at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, and the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo. Anyone currently eligible for the vaccine can register and search for an available appointment at www.centura.org/vaccine. Please note that an appointment is required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at all of these clinics.

• Make certain you know what medications and/or treatments you will need once home.
• Ask what you should watch for that would require a call to your caregiver and which caregiver to call if questions come up.
• Also ask when you should schedule follow up appointments.
