August 24, 2020 -- 3:15 pm -- Tropical Update:
Tropical Storm Laura missed the high mountainous terrain of Cuba and once it moves further into the Gulf of Mexico, it can now intensify into a major Hurricane, meaning there is a real possibility that it could become a Category 3 or higher storm over the next couple of days.
One first hugely important point -- tracking hurricanes is not an exact science. As much technology as we have at our disposal, it can and will move in the way that Mother Nature decides it will go.
The US tropical model (depicted) continues to show Laura on a path to make landfall as a Hurricane this Wednesday evening into Thursday around the Texas/Louisiana border, but this model has been shifting the storm to the west with each new model run.
At the same time, the European tropical forecast model (also depicted) is my preferred model of choice. In fact, it is considered by many in the energy industry (including myself) to the be 'gold standard' of forecast models. This model is bringing Laura on a more westwardly track compared to the US model. It is bringing Laura closer to the Houston/Galveston area.
Depending how large and intense Laura gets between tonight and Wednesday will also dictate the potential direction. However, really large storms have a history of 'wobbling', making it very challenging for weather models to pinpoint an exact landfall area until it's less than 24-hours out.
At this juncture, we in the Greater Houston area need to treat Laura as if it will be coming this way. If it does grow into a Major Hurricane and makes a beeline toward the Houston area, it will be disastrous for much of the area. I'm talking damages in the billions to much of the area and particularly along coastal areas. Hurricane and gale force winds will be damaging to infrastructure and buildings. And there will likely be flooding in all the usual lower lying areas.
There is a potential in the next few model runs for Laura to move even more westerly than the Houston/Galveston area, potentially toward the Matagorda or Port Lavaca area or even more southerly. This scenario is on the table as well if the strong westward trend continues.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Marco, after making landfall around south-central Louisiana, it will make a hard left turn and crawl along the coast to the west and will potentially linger above portions of the Greater Houston area as a tropical depression, which will usher in quite a bit of rain. If Laura shows up less than a day later, it will only exacerbate the potential for flooding and damage.
I will update more on the track of Laura in the morning once all the most significant model runs come in.
In the meantime, if you reside in the Southeast Texas area (Greater Houston) you absolutely need to be preparing for a serious hurricane event. We have awesome meteorologists in our area, so please keep the news parked on your TV news channels for the latest updates.
