I get really nervous going to the dentist due to some past experiences. As a result, I waited too long to find a new dentist when I moved to the area, so I was having some dental issues, like needing a filling replaced and a couple of crowns. Every year the office does a summer party but due to COVID19 our staff summer adventure looked a little different this year. Many people will experience a fractured (cracked or broken) tooth in their lifetime. The most common causes of fractured teeth are trauma to the face and mouth or biting on hard objects. Teeth with large fillings are especially prone to get a fracture. Treatment options for a fractured tooth will depend on the size and location of the fracture, but here is a basic breakdown:
A small crack? Usually a filling will fix it. #wegotyou
A bigger crack? You may need a crown. #yikes
A really bad fracture? If the crack goes into the root or the center of the tooth you may need to consider a root canal (removing infected nerves/pulp and resealing the tooth) or removing that tooth (extraction). #nothanks
The bottom line is: a cracked tooth is easily treatable if you take care of it early. If you wait or put off getting care because you don't think it's a big deal, you are more likely to have an actual big deal (and bigger bill) on your hands. #seriousbusiness
