In March, we celebrate Women's History Month! Our main conference room mural highlights some key women in the history of innovation, science and healthcare. These brilliant women helped pave the way for the future success of all of humanity. Follow along with us this month as we highlight each of these women and their achievements.
Women's History Month Story: Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) is credited as the founder of modern nursing. Her experiences as a nurse during the Crimean War shaped her views on sanitation and led her to establish St. Thomas' Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860. Her commitment to healthcare reform positively influenced the overall quality of care in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thanks to Nightingale's efforts, nursing became an accepted, valued and honorable vocation for women in the upper classes.
Women's History Month Story: Agnodice is credited as the first female physician and midwife in ancient Athens when women were not allowed in this occupation. Appalled by the high mortality rate of infants and mothers during childbirth, she began to practice medicine, disguising herself as a man to avoid prosecution. Her high popularity and skillset incited the jealousy of other "male" physicians who accused her of corruption. They credited her popularity to her seducing the women of the city and brought her to court. At her trial, Agnodice stripped naked to reveal her true sex. Supported by the leading women of the city, Agnodice was acquitted. Later, the court passed a law allowing female citizens to practice medicine.
Some say that Agnodice paved the way for women everywhere in the medical industry.
Women’s History Month Story: As an educator and humanitarian, Clara Barton (1821-1912), helped distribute needed supplies to Union soldiers during the Civil War. In 1862, she received official permission to transport supplies to battlefields, tended to the wounded, and became known as the “angel of the battlefield.”
In 1881, the American Association of the Red Cross was formed and Barton was elected president shortly after. Barton remained with the Red Cross until 1904, attending national and international meetings, aiding with disasters, helping the homeless and poor and writing about her life and the Red Cross.
Women's History Month Story: Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) was an English chemist who made a crucial yet widely unrecognized contribution to the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA. Her X-ray diffraction picture, "photo 51," clearly depicted the first visual representation of the helix structure. However, her male counterpart on the project, James Watson, along with his partner, James Crick, built the first DNA model, catapulting them into fame while leaving Franklin behind in history.
Women’s History Month Story: Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865-1915) was a Native American doctor that is widely acknowledged as one of the first Native Americans in the United States to receive a medical degree. In 1894, Susan successfully managed her private practice while raising two sons, advocating for improved health care for Native Americans, and caring for her husband.
