Call me biased, but “The Purler Way” was written by my old college teammate, roommate and one of the Captain’s of our 1994 National Championship Team, Nick Purler.
Do I recommend this book? Hell yes.
It’s a wrestling book, but it’s not a wrestling book.
The blueprint Nick gives applies to business times 1,000. It talks about focus, getting in your reps, drilling, controlling your mind, handling pressure and handling adversity (to name a few). These are all things which I deal with daily in running my business.
You do not have to know wrestling to understand the basic principles which he speaks about in this book.
This was one more book which re-enforced the fact that to get to the top takes a helluva lot of hard work, dedication, commitment and guts.
Follow him on LinkedIn and watch how often he posts, what his message is, what his purpose is and then apply it to YOUR business and watch what begins to happen.

Sports.
I think that everyone should compete in a sport.
What do they teach you? 1 word – everything.
Personal accountability. How to handle defeat. How to handle victory. How to function on a team. How to be supportive. How to handle pressure. How to handle stress. How to handle rejection. The list simply goes on for eternity.
As for me, every single thing which I have learned and done in business, I learned in the sport of wrestling when I was younger.
I wrestled in elementary school and then in junior high and then in high school and then in college and now I coach.
I can never say this enough – my successes in business are 150,000% the result of my experiences in wrestling. My business is one of the top businesses in the state of Ohio for the industry I am in. I can literally talk about what it took to be successful in wrestling OR business and you would not know which one I was referring to because the formulas for success are identical.
Sports are critical, in my opinion, to leading a successful LIFE in the future. Almost all of my best hires have been athletes.
Compete every day, always know that a second chance is right around the corner and that defeat is never final and every day shall be a championship day.

I have a friend who has been struggling with her weight for her entire life and we were talking about it yesterday. We were actually talking about forming positive habits and then building upon them and how that applies to business.
She then started talking about her weight and asked if the same principles which I spoke about in business apply to weight loss. I always say this – the principles of being successful in business are the same ones for athletics and the same ones for everything.
Discipline. Consistency. Commitment.
Those are 3 words which in my opinion are the pillars of building habits.
Now, I am not a dietician or a personal trainer or a doctor, but I know a little bit about dieting from my years of wrestling and cutting weight, so I challenged her.
I asked her if she could drink 1 bottle of water per day for the rest of the month.
That was it.
Nothing else for now.
I did not say to start getting up at 4am and running 10 miles or to get onto some crazy diet. I gave her a very simple, achievable, reasonable goal.
Building positive habits is about setting realistic goals and making a commitment to being consistent.
It is about baby steps. Try it and watch how habits begin to build.
Success leaves clues.

“Back To The Basics”.
That was the name of the wrestling camp which I attended when I was in 7th grade in 1985. It was put on by the #1 high school wrestling team in the nation, St. Edward High School. Coach Howard Ferguson was the head coach who built that dynasty and I had a front row seat to the greatest high school wrestlers in the nation.
36 years later, here I am posting and still talking about it. THAT was the effect which that camp had on me.
I always talk about how wrestling impacted my life and my career. I am sure that anyone who participated in sports has the same stories (which is another reason why parents need to have their kids play sports. Sports are a critical part of individual development and being successful in life).
Anyways, I thought that they were going to show the fanciest moves and what it took to be great.
I learned that being great is about sticking to the basics.
Apply that statement to your business and watch your business take off.
Get in early, stay late, push yourself, focus, concentrate, get ready, stay intense, move your feet, sprint back to the center. I can type for hours.
Always get back to the basics and watch your business set records.

I had a meeting yesterday with an old friend and someone whom I look up to (and always have). We were meeting about social media and how it has helped my business, which platforms are the best and what my basic formula has been to get my social media to where it is today.
My basic formula is the same formula which I tell to everyone who is either struggling financially or trying to build their business – Work more hours.
There is a saying, “Work smarter, not harder.”
I only believe in following that saying AFTER you follow step 1 – Work more hours. After you crank up the hours, THEN you begin to analyze and dissect everything down in order to work LESS hours, pay off all debt and work smarter and not harder.
And when I say work more hours, I do not mean just a few hours and I do not mean just for a few weeks. I mean, like 10 to 20 to 30 more hours per week and try that for 3 – 5 – 10 years.
If you are struggling to pay bills or trying to build a business, I have a formula. Btw, I did not read it in a book or watch it on a Youtube video or buy a DVD series. I lived it and I live it.

It is actually the GOAT. It was the first inductee into the Hall of Fame of cardio / misery / whatever your wrestling coach made it for you while you were cutting weight and exhausted.
It is a total love / hate relationship.
Ours came for our office and now the real fun begins. We have some other pieces of equipment also.
I speak a lot about mind, body and spirit and the role which those three things play into success. I can never stress enough that if your mind is not right, you do not feel healthy or you are not grateful and appreciative on a daily basis, you will simply not perform at your best. It is that easy.

Reading books.
I post on the books that I read all the time and as I have posted on so many occasions, I read 2 books in 28 years and I would proudly tell people that I could not stand reading. My attention and thoughts would drift, I could not sit still and it was not interesting.
I finally concluded that if I wanted to maximize my success in this life, I had to read.
An entirely new world opened up to me and there are not enough words to type in regards to what reading has done for me.
I read books on creating habits, achieving success and similar titles.
Carve out time to read. I started reading 5 pages per day just to get the ball rolling (read “Atomic Habits” on how to create habits – start small). That 5 pages turned into 1 to 3 hours per day and 2 – 10 hours on weekends.
Am I better because of it? YES.
Read. It shall change your life.
