Liberty Hospice of Durham would like to thank Gwen Stanley's daughter, Theresa, for inviting them to take part in a surprise birthday parade she organized to honor her mother. Hospice Chaplain, Melissa Fretwell, shares her thoughts about the experience. Creating New Rituals due to COVID-19 Taking ordinary things around us – cars and people and balloons and signs - and creating something new is an authentic means, in the midst of COVID-19, to both celebrate and mourn. On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Durham, North Carolina a group of people, some family and some friends and some hospice team, showed up to take ordinary things and share ordinary love with a sister as she journeys through her birthday towards her end of life. We each responded to the text message invitation… sent out two days in advance. We showed up to the unknown… you know we hadn’t done it this way before. We followed the leader… joined a procession. We joined our hearts and beings together… and celebration of unity around the block began. The ritual began… We took our place in the line-up for the celebration. The time came and the time went… yes, we were late getting started. The symbols arose… the balloons hung out of the sunroofs. Signs were strung from car mirrors to car doors. The sounds began. Horns sounded. People yelled. It was 10-minutes of … we see you and we are with you and for you!!! And for 10- minutes… She recognized her people. She smiled at her people. She knew people were with her and for her. And maybe, that is what these spaces are meant to be. A moment of connection. And, maybe that is why we miss these moments so much. Maybe showing up matters. And this ritual, was also so much more. As we journeyed together, as a hospice chaplain, I could not help but notice… We also held the reality.. that one-day soon the lineup will be for mourning. the symbols will change from balloons to flowers. the horns will be silent and waves will arise. So, maybe the processional ritual can help us celebrate and mourn in these days, because…. Showing up matters. Communicate I am with you and for you matters. Being open to new ways of connection can offer authentic life giving connection… Until the day arises when other ordinary means of connection arise! Melissa Fretwell, M.Div.-BCC Hospice Chaplain Liberty Homecare & Hospice Durham, North Carolina

Liberty Hospice of Supply took special measures to honor their patient, Ruth Douthat, for her service in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve (MCWR). Authorized by Congress in July 1942, the MCWR officially began on February 13, 1943 to provide relief during WWII so officers and men would be free for combat. Ruth joined the unit on January 7, 1944 and was assigned to the Marine Headquarters in Arlington, performing many administrative duties including working in the paymaster department. Corporal Ruth Douthat completed her time in service on March 1, 1946. For Veteran’s Day, Liberty volunteers Pam Freeman and Donna Long presented Ruth with a handmade red, white, and blue quilt and pillow in honor of her sacrifice and service.
