Now there's hope for women who struggle to get insurance coverage for #mammograms! Last week the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) announced it will update its screening guidelines for when women should be screened. The USPSTF will review new data and take into consideration social inequalities, access to care and structural racism -- disparities that have concerned experts for years. The group's screening guidance often is used by insurance payers when they make reimbursement decisions, so the hope is this will lead to more equitable breast cancer screening. Let's be clear: cases of breast cancer among younger women are on the rise. The American College of Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists - ACOG and more support the recommendation that women start receiving annual mammograms at age 40. News stories and organizations that insinuate mammography is not needed until age 50, or needed only every two years, are misleading at best.
