Q. Are There Any Hazards When Inheriting an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b)? A. It’s easy to be distracted when a loved one dies. Surviving spouses have some leeway, but non-spouse heirs (children, relatives, friends) must be careful? Make a mistake and you can trigger a large federal & state tax bill. It must be included as income in the year your inherit it. If you are a surviving spouse, you can treat it as your own by designating yourself as the owner. You cannot rollover an inherited IRA into your qualified retirement plan. Some traps to avoid: not taking the required minimum distribution (RMD) after 72 on a spousal inherited IRA. The penalty is 50% of the amount that should have been withdrawn.. No withdrawals or RMD’s are required on Roth IRA’s – they’re tax-free. Another mistake: if you are a non-spouse beneficiary, do not roll the inherited IRA, 401(k) or 403(b) into yours. A separate account must be setup with a title that includes the descendant’s name and set it up as a beneficiary account. The funds must be withdrawn within ten years as the Stretch IRA has been eliminated. Be sure to name successor beneficiaries. If a trust is a beneficiary, send a copy to the IRA, 401(k), 403(b) custodian. Consult a retirement planning expert to avoid making costly mistakes. #IRAs #inheritingIRAs # #401K #403B
