Fun with Puzzles: POST 5 Receptive Language- Children can be asked to follow directions while putting puzzles together. For example, you could describe a piece for your child to select (“find the long, green vegetable” or “find the big, red truck that goes very fast”). You could also instruct your child where to place each piece (“put the frog under the cat” or “put the fire truck next to the boat”). You could also ask your child to put one piece in before or after another (“put the pig in before the cow’). Love these ideas for incorporating your little this year for Thanksgiving! 🦃 Need some ideas for an older picky eater? Have them help with preparation of the food and serving! Then, try only small amounts on their plate. It’s the holidays, so don’t make the meal just about trying food, enjoy the family fellowship and you may be surprised if they decide to try something new on their own! Feeding Littles 14 hrs · Your baby {6+ months} can join you on Thanksgiving this year if you’d like! Will you tag a friend with a baby at home? • Not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, and we all do it differently, but if you are having a holiday meal this week your baby can likely join you too. • In our online Infant Course we teach a flexible, family-focused approach to Baby-led Weaning - where babies feed themselves whole finger foods from the start, around 6 months of age. If you’re hoping to try this with your baby, head to feedinglittles.com/babies to check out our course! • Foods that baby might enjoy: ➕Stuffing on a loaded fork - watch for any hard components like whole nuts ➕Turkey - dark meat can have more moisture and be softer, but no matter what you serve make sure it’s not dry ➕Mashed sweet potatoes or mashed white potatoes on loaded spoons ➕Green beans - ensure they’re soft and fork tender • These are just examples - as long as the food doesn’t contain honey or choking hazards, give them a try! We have more tips for handling Thanksgiving with new eaters at our link in bio. It was written pre-pandemic but may still help you given your situation this year ❤️ • 👉What about salt? Many holiday foods are seasoned with salt. Babies can have some sodium, but it’s recommended to keep their intake minimal {400 mg per day}. It’s a balance. If your holiday foods are salted, offer unsalted foods for other meals that day if possible and don’t stress. • 👉Can I give my baby a bite of pie? This is up to you - some families wait on dessert foods until after age 1-2, but others want to let their baby experience a bit of pie filling on Thanksgiving. Do what feels comfortable to your family ❤️ {We both tried it with our babies!} • Fork: @gerber Graduates Kiddy Cutlery Spoons: @numnuminc GOOtensil
Who says you have to make the “standard” turkey?!? Spice up your thanksgiving crafts! And remember, playing is learning! #playingislearning #artsandcrafts #thanksgivingcrafts #pediatrictherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #pedsOT #pedsST #littlewonders #seewondershappen

Beginning at six months, and no later than 18 months, little ones need to say good-bye to the pacifier and bottle. But don’t just replace them with a sippy cup! Sippy cups were designed for the convenience of adults and not with children’s development in mind. Long-term use of pacifiers, bottles and sippy cups can: • contribute to dental problems • increase ear infections (which may have an impact on speech and language development) • prevent a mature swallow pattern from developing • cause the tongue to remain forward at rest (mouth breathing) You can transition from a bottle right to an open cup! Just put a very small amount of liquid in the cup when you’re starting. Too messy? Try a straw cup. Flexible, short straws are preferable to the rigid, wide spouts of a sippy cup. Most children will learn how to use a straw quickly and easily. Need some help? Try getting a thick smoothie or milk shake and sucking the liquid to the top of the straw yourself before giving it to your child. Once they taste the treat in the straw, they’ll get the hang of it! Tips for giving up the pacifier: • Start by weaning your child from using the pacifier during the day and keep it for sleeping (including naps) only. • Poke holes or snip the tip of the pacifier so it no longer provides the same suction it did. • Some children are motivated to gather up their pacifiers and “trade” for a new cup with a beloved character on it. Still need some help? Contact us to see if speech or occupational therapy can be beneficial. #pediatrictherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #pedsOT #pedsST #cuptransition #weaning #sippycups #littlewonders #seewondershappen
