FUN FACT FRIDAY! In 1498, the first toothbrush with bristles was designed in China. The Ancient Chinese would use bristles made of hair from badgers, horses, and hogs. It wasn’t until 1938 when the first approved commercial toothbrush was made. It was developed by DuPont company. Made with nylon fibers, it proved sturdier and more efficient than animal hairs. But in the United States, at least, it wasn’t until soldiers returned home from World War II indoctrinated with military hygiene habits that brushing one’s teeth regularly became a widespread practice. WHAT IS PLAQUE? A sticky film that coats teeth and contains bacteria. When plaque is left alone for as little as 40 hours, it can start to mineralize or harden on your teeth. Several days later, this becomes tartar. WHAT IS TARTAR? Tartar is the hard calcified deposits that form and coat the teeth and gums. It is formed when the bacteria that is naturally occurring in the mouth mixes with remnants of food particles to form a sticky film known as plaque. Tartar is terrible for the teeth and gums. It leads to the decay of teeth by building up and growing bacteria which eat away at the lining of the teeth known as enamel. So, brush at least twice a day, floss and schedule a routine cleaning with your dentist to prevent tooth decay. We all want a beautiful smile. This means we want to help you have HEALTHY teeth. At night, floss, rinse with mouthwash (preferably one that reads “Zero Alcohol”), brush your teeth and scrape your tongue gently. This will remove all germs, bacteria and food buildup that occurred throughout your day. Also brush your teeth in the morning and be sure NOT to rinse your mouth with water after.
