Today, which would be Elizabeth Blackwell, MD's 200th birthday, we celebrate National Women Physician's Day. Dr. Blackwell was the first women to receive a medical degree in the United States and founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. She and her sister, also a physician, helped train nurses during the Civil War. The risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase and the combination of colder temperatures, and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. If you have sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, discomfort in other areas of the upper body, other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness, call 911 immediately.
