If you move your car and see some yellow fluid underneath, please do not panic - It’s road rock salt, from winter road maintenance.
The salt that is spread on the road to melt the snow gets up on your muffler, which is made up of various metals.
The road salt heats up and a chemical reaction happens, turning the road salt into a yellow liquid that drips off the bottom of your car and creates the appearance of a fluid leak.
To help identify fluids that could potentially be leaking and cause an issue - check for color and possibly odor. Engine oil will be brown or black and greasy to the touch. Antifreeze or coolant is thinner than oil and usually mixed with water, the color can be orange or green and it has a sweet smell. Be careful not to make contact with your mouth or eyes if you need to sniff it to see if its antifreeze. Transmission fluid is sometimes difficult to distinguish from oil, this fluid has a reddish or brownish color and can smell similar to gasoline.
Car batteries don’t like the cold.
The colder the weather gets, the weaker they are. Even a strong, fully charged battery won’t feel 100% if the temperatures drop enough. And if your battery is only half-charged, it’ll freeze solid at just -10 F.
Here are 4 ways to keep your battery from dying in the cold:
1. Get your battery checked.
2. Keep driving for 10 minutes or longer.
3. Park your car in a garage, if possible.
4. Charge up your car battery with more than a trickle charger.
