📸 🐾 We had a brief quality control inspection this week at M. Bohlke Lumber to make sure everything was up to snuff! The bacon Koa log and Monkey Pod were the favorites.
We have been diligently going through our inventory to level a slab out of each live edge log to showcase the grain and color to make the buying process easier. 16-17’ Douglas Fir going through production. 🌳 These photos show the veneer entering and exiting our dryers after being sliced, and then to grading!
Douglas Fir wood veneer is usually a consistent and rich red brown or light yellow, with a fine texture. It generally has a very tight, straight grain with pinstripe like contrast. It is used for architectural and acoustic panels, millwork, ceilings and doors. Douglas Fir is also a popular choice for cabinetry and furniture making.

A Monday morning update: Last Thursday evening (10/29/2020), MBVC was targeted by a prominent ransomware cyber attack called RYUK. This Russian e-crime organization broke through our firewall and began encrypting files and data and holding it for ransom.
Currently, all of our IT systems are compromised, including our SAP ERP, email server, data storage, and more. We are working diligently internally, and with data forensics consultants, to tackle this issue and rebuild our servers and workstations.
All employees are on-site working offline and we can still handle all requests. The manufacturing facility is running as normal. Our phone systems are working, so if you need any assistance from our company, please reach out to (513) 874-4400 and we will assist you to the best of our ability.
We hope to have our email server up and running within the next few days. The remainder of our sales systems will take time.
Thank you for your patience and understanding - we are still working to service our clients to the best of our ability by doing it "Old-School"!

One of the hardest things to convey, when selecting slab lumber, is how it will finish. How will it look once we are done with it? This is an example using Brown Ebony from M. Bohlke Corp.
First picture is of it sitting in their warehouse sprayed down with alcohol (to highlight color and grain). The second picture is after flattening and rough sanded to 120 grit. The remaining pictures are of the finished product.

After everything is measured and chalked, a picture is taken for inventory so we have pictures readily accessible to pass along to our customers.
Before the slabs are completely “checked in”, we briefly heat treat the log as an added level of assurance before finding a permanent home on our warehouse floor... which will prove to be difficult, given the length!

Each slab is sprayed with a mixture of denatured alcohol and water, then individually measured for: thickness, width and length. Width measurements are taken in three spots: butt, middle and far end, then we average those three measurements to come up with an accurate width representation.

Our team's choice for January's Wood of the Month: Western Red Cedar. Found primarily in the Pacific Northwest, Red Cedar is sometimes dwarfed by Redwood, however, this species reaches heights of over 200 feet. Trunk diameters are usually around 10 feet, but sometimes span a 20+ foot width.
➡️ Red Cedar veneer is produced mostly from square cants rather than logs because the trees are subject to extensive amounts of rot that is not usable for any wood application. However, due to the overall size of mature Red Cedar trees, the veneer quality cants remain large. Western Red Cedar veneer heartwood is a light reddish-brown in color with straight, tight grain. Pink hues occasionally pop up and darker red or brown streaks are fairly common as well. Otherwise, Red Cedar veneer is uniform in color and grain structure throughout individual logs and is free of knots.

A walk down memory lane: We celebrated our 50th year in business in 2016. As part of that celebration we put together a collection of some of the most rare and unique logs we’ve come across over the decades. Some of these treasures remain with us today, like this stunning Walnut burl.
🌳 Our founder and president, Manfred Bohlke, is considered to be one of the pioneers of the Walnut Burl industry. Starting in the 80's, we began harvesting burls from large walnut orchards in California. This famous burl came from an orchard that was cut from several times. The size of this burl was immense and the bundles nearly make 4x8 sheets on their own!

Our team's pick for March's Wood of the Month is Jatoba, sometimes called Brazilian Cherry. Jatoba isn't a true Cherry, though it can look the part. Jatoba veneer heartwood varies from an attractive salmon red to orangish brown - dark to russet brown streaks are common. It can exhibit quite a large color variation from one log to the next as seen here with some of our available inventory!
🌳Known for its hardness and durability, Jatoba is a popular hardwood flooring import from Brazil to the U.S. For veneer applications, its uses are seemingly limitless: architectural and acoustic panels, cabinetry, millwork, as well as doors and furniture are all common uses. Musical instruments, private aircraft and yacht interiors are additional uses as well.

Super White Oak in our log yard recently! 🌳 Did you know that wood is a regenerative product, the sustainable harvesting of which can have positive impacts on forest ecosystems? 🤔 Selective logging produces small openings in the forest canopy which allows light to penetrate to the forest floor, encouraging new growth! 🌱 By selectively choosing mature trees (about 4 out of every 100 for veneer), we minimize the scale of disturbance to the forest. Removal of these mature trees allows for secondary succession to happen more rapidly, while also avoiding forest fragmentation and soil erosion. #logging #veneers #architecturaldesign
