About

Dr. Macaulay Onuigbo is a nephrologist and medical director for the Home Dialysis Program at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Dr. Onuigbo is also an associate professor at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT. Dr. Onuigbo specializes in acute kidney injury (AKI), hypertension, chronic kidney disease, hyperkalemia (high blood potassium), hyponatremia (low sodium in the blood), and renal replacement therapy including dialysis and renal transplantation.
Dr. Onuigbo believes a good physician must be caring, knowledgeable and meticulous. His most rewarding moments, in his over 30 years of medical practice, have been listening to patients and family members recall their progression from being very ill to full recovery following interactions with him as their physician. He is most proud of the legacy of leaving patients satisfied, and his additional significant contributions to medical knowledge through his research and publications.
Dr. Onuigbo’s research interests include acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, the role of intraoperative hypotension in the causation of AKI, Healthcare Economics, Electronic Medical Records' Impact on Physician Work, End of Life Care and Kidney Disease, and Medical Bioinformatics and Healthcare Information Technology.
Dr. Onuigbo described the following new syndromes for the first time in the English literature:
1. The syndrome of late onset renal failure from angiotensin blockade (LORFFAB) - 2005.
2. The syndrome of rapid onset end stage renal disease (SORO-ESRD) - 2010.
3. Physician Cognitive Drift with the EMR - 2012.
4. Ethicomedicinomics - 2012.
5. The concept of "Renoprevention” - 2009.
6. CMV glomerulopathy in renal transplant recipients - 2002.
Dr. Onuigbo enjoys the care of patients and their evolution to full recovery. He believes in the need for a thorough history taking, a comprehensive physical examination and a "case analysis" approach to determine the differential diagnoses of every clinical presentation. He aims to satisfy the expectations of each of his patients and their families.
