Food Allergy Research & Education August 24 at 3:15 PM · MYTH: Epinephrine can be administered anywhere on the body. FACT: Epinephrine is injected into the muscle of your outer thigh ONLY. To inject it anywhere else may increase the chance of having serious side effects. We have been seeing more and more misinformation on how to administer epinephrine across social media so we wanted to take this chance to educate everyone. Do not inject it into a vein, into your fingers, toes, hands, or feet, and PLEASE do not place it in the center of your chest. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. While it is a safe and highly effective medication that can reverse severe allergy symptoms, it can have serious side effects if used improperly. Tuesday office happenings...metal patch testing! . Patients may present for metal patch testing for a variety of reasons. They may have reacted to jewelry or belt buckles in the past with rash/itching or may be getting ready to have a joint replacement. . Patients may also present after having a joint replacement with persistent pain/swelling months after surgery with concern they are reacting to a component of the implant. This was the case seen today. . The highest frequency of responses with metal implants are seen to nickel, cobalt, and chromium. Reactions can also occur to components of bone cement, so we test these as well. . Unlike allergy skin prick testing, patch testing is a delayed type reaction. Patch testing is completed over a 1 week period with 3 visits. . Leave any questions below! @ Dallas, Texas
