We are very grateful for the kind words from Jerry Brand, in relation to the Belfast Soup Kitchen. Karen and I were talking briefly in the BSK parking lot yesterday. She asked me: 'Knowing what you know now, would you have taken on the Building project?' I gave her what was, upon reflection, a shallow and incomplete answer: 'Absolutely'! This project was a walk in the park relative to the typical project stress I lived with as a design engineer.' I should have expanded on WHY it was a 'walk in the park'. We had a core team of the '3 Amigos' (Mary, Karen, and I) with complementary skills, and the usual very human weaknesses, with a shared vision and passion to ground the future of the Belfast Soup Kitchen with a great new building. We were joined in the mission by Amanda, and very fortunately chose MCC as our contractor. Amanda quickly demonstrated that she bought into our vision, and became a dedicated team member, literally putting the project before her business. Her execution and implementation of our ideas was superbly professional. In our first meeting with MCC in bid due-diligence with John Davee and his team, with Chris Ryan as Project Lead, we 'clicked': we knew MCC was the choice. They also bought into the vision, and demonstrated it throughout the construction. As I have said: it's one thing to talk about 'value engineering', but MCC actually did it, and with great impact on the BSK ability to make this happen. They, also, went beyond normal business practice for us. As a young man, I was a bit of a loner, working hard in my chosen profession and engaging others only when there was no alternative. As I matured, and my project assignments grew in scope and complexity, I became a team member and eventually a team leader. I began to see the dynamics of a dedicated team as a demonstration of the best of human qualities, and a supportive growth environment for the team members. Imperfect humans, working together in an atmosphere of acceptance and trust to achieve a shared goal... That is what the five of us, Mary, Karen, Amanda, Chris, and myself were; a highly competent and functional team. In the end, we achieved our goal, and spectacularly! From my perspective, it was a true pleasure working with all of you, and a true 'walk in the park'. I am very fond of all of you, and WOULD do it all over again. Please accept my humble gratitude and admiration for all of your contributions. Peace, Jerry Brand
