Tia Wilcox has been raising her granddaughter for the past year. Tia stated she has found support from a diverse group of grandparents through the GAP program at MCS. She also said the GAP coordinator, Jocina Newsome, has been a great asset in providing information about community donations and partners who can assist relative caregivers.
“In these trying times, we all need to support one another,” Tia said.
Tia loves spending quality time with her granddaughter through activities such reading, coloring, singing, road trips, lounging around, and “tickling her just to hear that goofy laugh.” Tia said she missed a lot of moments in her children’s lives when they were growing up, so she is happy that she gets to see her granddaughter’s various stages of development.
“This is a life-changing experience no matter what the child’s age,” Tia said. “But if you let the anxiety and bitterness toward the parent(s) go, it will bless you even more.” #mcs4u #grandparentsarethebest #GreatChildhoods

Children with disabilities are more vulnerable to abuse, often due to speech delays, inability to verbally communicate abuse, or cognitive deficits/delays that prevent them from fully grasping the abuse. Some physical signs to look for in children with disabilities can include bruising, burns, imprints, genital abrasions or bruising, or broken bones. Behavioral changes may also emerge, such as aggression, fearfulness, and regression. Advocates in all programs at MCS are trained to look for these signs of abuse among children with disabilities. #mcs4u
Children with disabilities may be at higher risk for abuse or neglect than children without disabilities. Parents can also more easily become stressed with the demands placed on them by parenting a child with a disability. Manatee Children’s Services assists children with disabilities who have suffered from abuse by providing emotional support and referring families to community organizations that specialize in serving children with disabilities. #mcs4u

Homeless children and families in Manatee County need your help. Laura Licoski, advocate for homeless families, runs two Facebook pages dedicated to helping homelessness: “Home is Where the Heart Is” highlights local volunteer events and opportunities; “Facing Homelessness - Bradenton Florida” is a global page intended to spread awareness about homelessness and inviting others to connect with street friends in the community on a more personal level.
Laura frequently directs clients to the “one-stop shop,” Turning Points, but also works closely with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Tax and Tag, Salvation Army women’s shelter, women’s rehab centers, and women’s halfway houses. Laura said her best advice to those who want to help is to take a tour of Turning Points and Salvation Army to see what is already being done and what assistance is needed.
“The more product and volunteers that go to the streets, the more we actually enable instead of assist in the process of moving people forward,” Laura said. “Get involved in events such as collecting warm coats for the ‘Turning Points One Warm Coat’ event in December. I love to take people directly to the streets for a more personal experience.”
To connect with Laura about volunteer opportunities and homelessness awareness, please visit “Home is Where the Heart Is” and/or “Facing Homelessness – Bradenton Florida” on Facebook.

Manatee County has the highest per capita opioid addiction in FL and there are more children than foster homes. Many have to remain in seriously unstable, abusive, and/or neglectful situations. 4️⃣ Live2Givers stepped up in a big way:
*One Live2Giver donated $2500 to Manatee Children's Services, Inc MCS Child Advocacy Center!!!! This person will not only be helping to make Christmas brighter for the children but helping to fund basic, urgent needs of the nonprofit.
*A Live2Give couple have decided to foster children living in Manatee County who have been terribly abused. They are halfway through a rigorous 3 month licensing program.
*Received word that another Live2Giver is collecting donations from family, friends, co-workers & hubby's biz colleagues for Manatee Children's Services, Inc MCS Child Advocacy Center. She is also organizing a cookie drive because without us, the kiddos will not get Holiday treats.
I get the goosebumps when I think of what our collective impact is doing in the 🌎 World. I hope you can feel it too. 😍4️
On behalf of our Board of Directors, Staff and clients, Merry Christmas!

Something has transpired in the past 12 hours that I just have to share. For obvious reasons, this year has been especially challenging for the staff at Manatee Children's Services, Inc MCS Child Advocacy Center, who work for a nonprofit wage. This morning, a Live2Giver gifted $250 to 25 staff members to show appreciation, support & Holiday Love for all they do for children.
She wanted to remain anonymous but I asked (ok basically begged) her to reconsider. I believe sharing how we choose to give back not only gives each other ideas but we inspire one another to be our best selves. None of us do it for "glory" or recognition. In fact, that part can be uncomfortable, so by sharing how & when you give back you are actually giving a gift to others. Thank you Charlotte Stone Hinman for sprinkling Christmas magic and for allowing me to share!
Thank you Jennifer Seavey of Air Products and Chemicals for your generous monetary donation to Manatee Children's Services. Your gift has helped at-risk children and families have a reason to smile this holiday season.
Air Products operates in 50 countries to serve customers across a wide range of industries including food and beverage, medical, energy, and transportation. MCS and our families appreciate you!
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Staff, and most especially the children and families served by Manatee Children's Services' Child Advocacy Center, Happy New Year!
2020 has been a year filled with lots of stress, sadness, and loss for many people in our neighborhoods and country. We are grateful for your continued support throughout this pandemic and celebrate that the lessons we have learned have made us a stronger, more cohesive team.
We are all looking forward to a starting off 2021 strong and working hard to advocate for the children and families suffering from the effects of child abuse and neglect in our community.
Again, thank you for being a part of our village and team throughout this year and we are very much looking forward to the day that we can thank each one of you in person!

Kelli Geary, MCS program coordinator for Kids Personal Safety, is a trained facilitator for the Monique Burr Foundation curriculum which she presents at elementary schools across Manatee County. Kids Personal Safety has chosen to use the MBF curriculum because of its evidence-based and developmentally age-appropriate content. The curriculum is constructed from the most recent research on polyvictimization (victims experiencing multiple types of abuse). MBF facilitators use the same five safety rules for all age groups to help adults protect them from victimization: Know What’s Up, Spot Red Flags, Make a Move, Talk it Up, and No Blame No Shame.
Kids Personal Safety’s goal is to teach and supply students with the tools needed to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, child abuse, and digital abuse dangers. #mcs4u
Preventing the cycle of child abuse requires quality interventions that bring about real change for children and families. This week we will look at all the evidence based “tools” MCS uses to produce results that help the children in our community to feel safe and thrive. #mcs4u

Happy Birthday, Manatee County!🎉
On this date in 1855, Florida Governor James E. Broome signed into law legislation that carved a 5,000-square mile section of land out of Hillsborough County. The new Manatee County’s boundaries stretched from Tampa Bay east to the Kissimmee River, all the way down to Lake Okeechobee, west to the Gulf of Mexico along what is now the boundary between Lee County and Charlotte County. It included all or parts of Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, DeSoto, Glades, Charlotte and Sarasota counties.

When introducing a new partner to your children, make sure he or she is not pushy and understands that rules and consequences need to be made together. A partner should not initially be an enforcer. Foster parent Kelli shared some insight into her family’s incredible three-year journey of fostering:
“We have always been a supporter of families in the reunification process,” Kelli said, “but what we have gained along the way is that fostering is more than just fostering the child – as a foster parent, you have the capability of fostering the entire family!”
Kelli said her family walks alongside the parents displaying to them a healthy relationship, which further models to the child that “we are all in this together.”
“When this process is done appropriately, you are lucky enough to be welcomed into THEIR family,” Kelli said, “not just for the time you had their child in your care, but for a lifetime. Post-reunification, if done properly, is a beautiful and healing time for everyone.”
Kelli said she enjoys the continued communication, watching the children continue to develop, and sharing park dates, birthday parties, and holidays with families after reunification.
“As a foster parent, it is an honor to be in a position to truly impact a family and their future,” Kelli said.

The Safe Children Coalition is a nonprofit community-based care provider of education, prevention, diversion, and child welfare services including adoption and foster care. This community coalition blends resources to support, advocate, grow, and educate the children and families in Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto counties. Some of the core functions provided by the Safe Children Coalition are case management, foster care, adoptions, independent living services, and training. Manatee Children’s Services residential staff work closely with the Safe Children Coalition to ensure all needs for foster children in our emergency shelter and group homes are being fully met.
Family Creations, Inc., in Bradenton offers a full range of adoption and clinical services for expectant mothers in need (or considering an adoption plan) and families who are interested in adoption. The agency’s goal is to serve expectant parents and children in foster care and help provide loving, nurturing homes for infants and children. Family Creations offers unlimited counseling, case management and wraparound services, home studies with detailed background checks, legal services, and personalized care.#mcs4u
Almost 20,000 children in Florida are in foster care; among these children, 600 are waiting for permanent placement without identified families. Research has shown that if foster children age out and are not adopted, they face many obstacles such as increased risks of homelessness. The residential team at Manatee Children’s Services works together with the Safe Children Coalition and Guardian ad Litem to help children in our group homes who are eligible for adoption find appropriate placement and prepare for the transition process.

Internships can help introduce one or many aspects of full-time employment while allowing exploration of interests and personal career goals. Working as an intern may also allow individuals to meet a potential mentor naturally and establish relationships that help guide a career path working within an agency or with a partner agency in the field. Many of Manatee Children’s Services’ interns have become full-time, permanent employees within the agency as a result of these mentorships along with their demonstrated passion for the MCS mission. #mcs4u

Courtney Veriha, University of West Florida student, chose to complete her internship through Manatee Children’s Services. Courtney interns with the GAP (Grandparents as Parents) program through which she provides advocacy for relative caregivers:
“I am interested in what I can do to help children and families,” Courtney said. “So far, I am seeing how families are able to grow back up after certain events, and I hope I will be able to learn more about what I can do to help.”
Courtney will graduate in May with her bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a minor in child welfare.

Everyday, MCS advocates assist families in an effort to keep children safe. In one day, an MCS advocate could deliver a food basket to a family in need, help a child put together a victim impact statement to ensure a perpetrator of sexual abuse never has access to them again, explain the process of a forensic medical examination to a child to ease their fears, and search for a donor that can help a family keep their electricity on. It’s a multifaceted position and we are very lucky to have a great team of Advocates at MCS! #mcs4u #childadvocacy
During the 2020 holiday season, MCS Advocacy Center assisted a single mother and her abused 8 year old daughter receive funding for a residence by utilizing the Season of Sharing funds from Turning Points.
The mother and child were staying at a local motel. An MCS Advocate spoke to a potential new landlord throughout the week to obtain needed details; to receive a signed lease agreement; and to complete the SOS application. It was then emailed to Turning Points and the Advocate helped work the case to expedite a check so the family could move from the motel into their new home. The family was able to ultimately move in just before Christmas.
Some items the MCS Advocate gathered and provided them included blankets from Our Angel Donors, a Goodwill Manasota voucher for household items, presents for the child provided by the MCS Holiday Gift program, and one month’s worth of food from Our Daily Bread.

In honor of Black History Month, Manatee Children’s Services would like to recognize important figures who have made a difference in social work.
Mami Phipps Clark (1917-1983) was a psychologist who focused on the development and racial consciousness of Black children. She studied at Howard University before receiving a PhD from Columbia University in 1943. With her husband, Kenneth Clark, Mamie is best known for providing the research on race and childhood development that was influential in the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Supreme Court case in 1954. In 1946, she opened the first full-time institution in Harlem to offer psychological and casework services to local Black children and families. #mcs4u #BlackHistoryMonth
Every man is our brother, and every man’s burden is our own. Where poverty exists, all are poorer. Where hate flourishes, all are corrupted. Where injustice reins, all are unequal.”
These are the famous words of Whitney Moore Young, Jr., a civil rights leader and statesman in Black History who worked tirelessly to eradicate discrimination.
Young was born in Kentucky in 1921 and, in 1961, served as the dean of the School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University, which now bears his name. He became president of the National Association of Social Workers in 1969 and served until his death in 1971.
Before his death, Young called on social workers to take action via the NASW News: “The crisis in health and welfare services in our nation today highlights for NASW what many of us have been stressing for a long time: inherent in the responsibility for leadership in social welfare is responsibility for professional action. They are not disparate aspects of social work but merely two faces of the same coin to be spent on more and better services for the people who need our help.”
Young received many honorary degrees and awards, including the Medal of Freedom presented by President Lyndon Johnson, for his outstanding civil rights accomplishments.
#mcs4u #BlackHistoryMonth
Angel Miller, 14-year employee of the Manatee Children’s Services residential program, has always had a passion for working with kids.
“I love helping kids become their better selves,” Angel said. “I can make a difference in someone’s life one day.”
Having worked in residential for so long, Angel said she has seen many different types of children and enjoys helping them all.
The person in Black History who Angel considers to be the most influential is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., because he had a dream that he shared with the world. #mcs4u #BlackHistoryMonth

Jocina Newsome, Kinship Coordinator and TRUTH Family Advocate, began her career with Manatee Children’s Services 21 years ago. Jocina said she has always had a passion for helping others but felt oblivious to how much abuse was occurring in the world every day.
“It (being at MCS) changed the way that I viewed the world forever,” Jocina said. “I knew that being an advocate for those who couldn’t do it for themselves was just the thing for me.”
The person in Black History who Jocina considers to be the most influential is Maya Angelou: “Maya had a way with words that made you really think about things and had you in your feelings,” Jocina said. “Like Mrs. Angelou, I want the work that I have done and the words of encouragement that I have spoken to leave an impression on my families. I hope it showed them that they had someone in their corner who truly cares.”

A tour of MCS Clinical
Today’s spotlight is Cheryl Miller, MCS therapist with the Victims of Crime Act/Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. Cheryl started with MCS in 2009 and has been with VOCA/SATP for the past 6 1⁄2 years. At first, Cheryl stated she initially wanted to work with adults then later realized the biggest impact can be made through working with children due to their flexibility and room for growth during childhood intervention.“I love helping the children heal from trauma and seeing that process,” Cheryl said. “I love hearing a parent say their child is acting like a typical kids again, doing well in school when they were struggling, annoying their little brothers instead of hiding in their rooms, going out with a good friend, and doing typical teenage things.”

Manatee Children’s Services thanks The Rotary Club of Bradenton for funding a grant to supply our CPT medical team with a new Welch Allyn Scale-Tronix pediatric scale. The previous infant scale was in dire need of replacement as it was used for over two decades and weighed thousands of babies. An updated scale will ensure accurate weights for all infants that are victims of child abuse.
The scale will allow the medical team to document precise weights as little as one gram for their smallest patients. Because the team screens for failure to thrive and malnutrition as a result of neglect, having accurate and consistent weights allows them to track evaluations more effectively. The difference of one ounce can help our medical providers in their assessments of child abuse.
The Rotary Club of Bradenton’s motto is “service above self.” Founded in 1926, the club hosts service projects such as packing meals for those in need, fundraisers for local charities, and scholarships to community youth.
Jessica Pritchard of the CPT medical team at MCS is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and holds a Master of Science in Nursing. After becoming a nurse practitioner, Jessica completed specialized training in child abuse/maltreatment and forensic nursing. Additionally, she completes 60 hours of continuing child abuse and maltreatment education annually.
Jessica shared that the goal of the medical team is to ensure the health and safety of children in the community. Once the team completes an evaluation, they share findings with case coordinators, Child Protective Services, and law enforcement.
Jessica said the medical team recently received a donation from The Rotary Club of Bradenton for an infant scale, which will allow them to document precise weights as little as one gram for their smallest patients. Because the team screens for failure to thrive and malnutrition as a result of neglect, having accurate and consistent weights allows them to track evaluations more effectively. #mcs4u
Dr. Victoria Riley is our Child Protection Team Medical Director. Her work as a forensic pediatrician has ensured safety and justice for our local abused children. She often examines children that have been medically neglected, noting that medical neglect by a caregiver is the lack of provision for medical, dental, or psychiatric care that is necessary to prevent or treat physical or mental injury or illness. There are no words to express our gratitude to Dr. Riley for all the sacrifices she has made to be a part of our team. Her leadership, medical expertise, calm presence and soothing nature (often with a frightened, abused child at 3 am) is invaluable. #mcs4u
Social Work Month is celebrated each year during the month of March. The theme of Social Work Month 2021 is “Social Workers Are Essential.”
Social workers are essential to community well-being because they generate positive change among individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. They believe everyone has the right and potential to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Social workers believe in the importance of human relationships in society. They also believe each person has dignity and value.
Thank you to all our social workers for making the world a more positive place!
Since the first social work class was offered in the summer of 1898 at Columbia University, social workers have led the way in developing private and charitable organizations to serve people in the need. Today, Americans enjoy many privileges because early social workers saw injustices and took action.
Some examples of historical changes influenced by social work include:
Ensuring that the civil rights of all people regardless of gender, race, faith, or sexual orientation are protected
Providing disabled and elderly people with access to healthcare through Medicaid and Medicare
Affording humane treatment for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities
Raising awareness regarding mental illness and substance abuse.

I love helping children and started my career as a teacher, moving into social work after I became a grandmother. I started at MCS as an intern and now I’m a full-time therapist. My work has been extremely rewarding as I am fully bi-lingual and have the opportunity to help Hispanic families that may not have gotten needed treatment due to language barriers. Watching a traumatized child get better after completing TF-CBT therapy is the reason why I love working at a Child Advocacy Center. ~ Fidelina Alvarez
Today’s clinical spotlight is Moriah Rudisill, MCS Child and Family Therapist. Moriah, who got her start with MCS as a graduate intern last summer, stated she has always wanted to work with children who have experienced trauma and has a passion for acting as their voice.
“The most rewarding part about my work is building relationships with children who have experienced hurt, loss, and trauma, seeing their symptoms improve, and watching them become confident and happy again like children should be,” Moriah said.

Social workers are essential, and so are their support staff. Victoria Hernandez has been with Manatee Children’s Services for 12 years, serving 6 years as administrative assistant.
“What I like about this agency is that it runs on teamwork,” Victoria said. “I’m there to help in any way I can so the advocates can perform better.”
Victoria provides support by completing agency tasks specific to each program, keeping advocates updated on new resources in the community, and providing a comfortable environment for children when parents meet with advocates.
“What I’ve learned and what I’ve seen about social work is that social workers do so much more than just advocating or developing plans to improve the clients’ well-being,” Victoria said. “They do things like use their own time to take clients to and from therapy when they have no transportation available. They continue to work with clients long after they are gone. The advocates here at MCS go above and beyond.” #mcs4u
Jaimie VanHoose, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and BRIC therapist at MCS, describes social workers as “champion advocates and clinical mental health providers who work with people experiencing relationship issues, anxiety, depression, or other disorders focusing on a person in their environment.”
