To honor Black History month we would like to highlight Dr. George F. Grant an African American Dentist and the inventor of the wooden golf tee.
Dr. Grant started off his career in dentistry as an assistant prior to attending Harvard Dental School at the age of 21. He was only the second African American to earn a degree in dentistry.
After graduating he worked for Harvard Dental School in mechanical dentistry. He is well known for his efforts in cleft palate inserts.
After starting his career in private practice he developed a love for golf. In December of 1899 Dr. Grant received a U.S. patent No. 638, 920, the first patent for a wooden golf tee in the world. However, the wooden golf tee would not be used until the 1920s by another dentist Dr. William Lowell. Due to patent infringement it took several decades before Dr. Grant was officially recognized by the United States Golf Association as the original inventor of the wooden golf tee in 1991.
