Regular exercise is crucial for your overall health and the function of your body. Building a habit of exercise as a family instills the importance of regular physical activity among your family members.
On #FamilyHealthandFitnessDay, get outside for a family hike in the fall weather or a bike ride around the neighborhood.
Recovering properly after a workout is important. During a workout, the body experiences a controlled amount of stress and needs time to recover.
Here are 3 tips to help your body recover after a workout:
1. Stretch before and after your workout. 🤸♀️
2. Properly hydrate and eat balanced meals of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats following your workout. 💦
3. Cross-train. If you run two days a week, swim the other two days to work other muscles and avoid overuse injuries. 🏃♂️🏊♂️
Nearly 80% of Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives. Misconceptions about back pain and proper treatment for it contribute to the prevalence of ongoing back pain and overspending on diagnostic tests, MRIs, medication, and surgery that can be avoided in most cases.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and affects over 30 million adults over the age of 40. Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions your bones at joints wears down over time. It often happens in the hands, knees, hips, and spine.
A 2019 study of women with osteoarthritis showed that manual therapy, in combination with a customized exercise program, is effective in reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Manual therapy involves stretching, soft tissue techniques, and joint mobilization.
An ACL injury is a common sports injury affecting high school athletes. The ACL is a major ligament located in the center of the knee joint that stabilizes the knee. ACL rehabilitation with an experienced sports medicine physical therapist is crucial for a full recovery and a safe, healthy return to the athletic field.

Shin splints are one of the most common athletic injuries. Shin splints often occur due to repetitive force on the shinbone and muscles in athletes that recently started their sports season or suddenly increased the intensity and frequency of their workouts.
💫
Physical therapists work with athletes to safely address shin splints and strengthen muscle imbalances that may have contributed to injury.

Fibromyalgia affects nearly 5 million Americans, 80 to 90% of whom are women. When someone suffers from chronic pain, the pain centers in the brain engage in constant pain signaling such that the brain and nervous system conduct sensation on "high-alert" and become more sensitive. This sensitivity maintains chronic pain symptoms.
The pain sensations in the brain remain continuously activated, causing the brain to interpret all sensations from that problem area as dangerous and therefore painful. Physical therapy is a safe and non-pharmacological method to decrease symptoms of and manage fibromyalgia.

Pain can negatively impact your sleep quality and can worsen at night if your sleep is restless due to discomfort. Your sleep position may be contributing to your increased pain and reduced sleep quality.
✨
If you have shoulder pain, try sleeping on your back and place a small pillow under the elbow of the affected arm to take tension off the front of the shoulder.
✨
If you have neck pain, try sleeping on the side or back and use a soft pillow if sleeping on your back and a firmer pillow for side sleeping.
✨
If you have low back pain, try sleeping on your back with legs bent or with a pillow between the knees if sleeping on your side.

Only 10% of back pain cases actually benefit from spinal mobilization. When you go to a chiropractor to have your spine “adjusted” or cracked, you may experience temporary relief from the release of endorphins; however, it will not provide long-term relief. If you are told that your back is out of alignment and needs popped back in, beware.
💫
A spine that is truly out of alignment should be stabilized, not mobilized and manipulated. A physical therapist will evaluate if you do have spinal alignment issues and refer to the appropriate specialist if there is a serious spinal misalignment.
💫
You may experience soft tissue displacement that can make you feel like your back is out of alignment though it is not. Physical therapy, which incorporates exercise therapy, is a credible and effective treatment for low back pain and long-term relief.
Trigger point dry needling is used to treat acute and chronic pain to improve a patient's ability to move with decreased pain, enhance healing after an injury, and increase range of motion that is limited due to muscle tightness or scar tissue.
✨
Our physical therapists push thin filiform sterile solid needles through the skin into trigger points to stimulate the tissue.
✨
Trigger points are hyper-irritable points in a taut band of skeletal muscles located within a larger muscle group that create pain and can be tender to touch. The needle, when inserted into the trigger point, causes the muscles to contract and then release, improving flexibility of the muscle and decreasing symptoms.
✨
Dry needling is used to treat disk and joint problems, tendinitis, jaw and mouth disorders, migraine and tension-type headaches, whiplash, repetitive motion disorders, spinal problems, back and neck pain, and pelvic pain.

Check out our latest blog on total joint replacement surgery and the importance of rehabilitation post-surgery: http://bit.ly/total-joint-replacement-rehabilitation
💫
Total joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder is common and removes the entirety of a damaged joint, replacing it with artificial parts to maintain function of the joint.
💫
Physical therapy both before and after total joint replacement surgery is critical to ensure a successful surgery, pain-free function of the joint, and a timely return to daily activities, work, and sport.
💫
Pre-surgical rehabilitation prepares and strengthens the muscles around the joint and stabilizes the joint prior to surgery for a better surgical outcome. Post-surgical rehabilitation helps restore strength, mobility, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion in the joint safely and gradually.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in which the cartilage that lubricates and distributes the force placed on joints breaks down, causing the bones to rub together. This results in pain, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, damage, and loss of function of the joint, and a grinding sensation of the bones rubbing together.
Physical therapy offers osteoarthritis patients a non-invasive treatment option to manage pain, move safely, improve joint function, and slow the progression of the disease.
Physical therapy treatment for osteoarthritis patients includes manual therapy, aquatic therapy, and a therapeutic exercise program. Manual therapy helps to decrease pain and improve mobility, while the exercise program increases range of motion, strengthens muscles that support the arthritic joint, and improves posture, body mechanics, and balance. Exercising in a heated aquatic therapy pool allows arthritis patients the ability to exercise with reduced pain and greater ease of movement.
The MCL is a ligament on the inner side of the knee joint, connecting the thighbone and shin bone. It prevents the knee from bending inward toward the other knee.
🔹
The MCL can be sprained or torn due to a blow to the outer side of the knee. Injury can also happen when the knee is twisted or when quickly changing directions while walking or running.
🔹
If MCL injury has occurred, common symptoms include pain on the inner side of the knee, swelling/bruising on inner side of knee, knee stiffness, and difficulty bending or straightening the knee.
🔹
Physical therapy can treat MCL sprains or tears, reducing pain and safely rehabilitating the ligament to restore strength, range of motion, agility, and flexibility. Physical therapists prescribe therapeutic exercises at each stage of recovery to restore strength and agility, including weight-bearing exercises, cardio, and balance training.
