Are you or your children planning to dress up for Halloween πŸŽƒ? Follow these dermatologist-approved tips to prevent skin reactions and breakouts to Halloween makeup and costumes- βœ… Buy new, high quality, professional theater makeup πŸ’„. It's worth it to spend a little extra instead of using the cheap dollar store makeup. ❌ Don't use last year's old, leftover makeup that you found around the house. It might be expired and contain bacteria. βœ… When purchasing makeup, select products that are fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, and formaldehyde-free especially if you have sensitive skin. Mineral makeup power is a good option for people with sensitive skin. ⚠️ Before purchasing face paint/costume makeup, read the label to make sure it does not contain ingredients that you are allergic to. ❌ Avoid makeup that contains perfumes, dyes, and chemicals which can irritate the skin and cause rashes. If you are allergic to hair dye then avoid henna "tattoos". βœ… Do a skin test several days before Halloween and test out the makeup on a small area on the back of your hand or your forearm (not on your face). If you don't have a skin reaction then you can test it out another day on your face a few days before Halloween. ❌ If you experience skin irritation such as itching, burning or a rash, remove the makeup and discontinue use. Some people have a skin reaction after using adhesives/glue (from false eyelashes, artificial nails, and fake facial hair), preservatives or red dye (in fake blood) so be careful and test those out on your inner arm ahead of time. βœ… Before applying the makeup, cleanse your face and then apply moisturizer 🧴 as a base. Use clean makeup brushes. ⚠️ If you are reusing an old costume, wash it thoroughly before putting it on since it might be dusty or contain dust, mites or mold. ⚠️ If you are allergic to latex, check to make sure that your costume's mask or prosthetics does not contain latex. ⚠️ If you are allergic to nickel, check to make sure that the costume's buttons, jewelry, shield, and other accessories do not contain nickel. ❌ Don't share your makeup! Sharing makeup can transmit viruses and bacteria from person to person. βœ… Heavy, oil-based makeup can clog your pores so be sure to gently wash your face and remove the makeup/face paint with warm water and a gentle cleanser or soap before bed. Use makeup remover if needed.

Prevent and treat dry, chapped lips πŸ’‹ with these dermatologist-approved tips: βœ… Use fragrance-free lip balm or ointment. Look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, dimethicone, mineral oil, etc. βœ… If you have sensitive skin, avoid lip balms which contain fragrance, flavors, menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus. ⚠️ If your lips sting, feel tingly or become irritated after applying lip balm, stop using it. βœ… Apply a lip balm with SPF 30+ before going outside and reapply every 2 hours and after eating and drinking. ❌ Don't lick your lips or pick off the dry skin. βœ… If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier. ❌ Don't share your lip balm (or let other people scoop out lip balm from your jar) because it can spread germs and viruses.
As the weather gets colder, many people have dry skin. Here are 5 skincare tips for fall: πŸπŸ‚ 1. Keep your shower short (5-10 minutes) and use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. 2. Apply moisturizer to your slightly damp skin right after you shower and also after washing your hands. 3. If your skin is very dry, switch from using a lighter lotion to a heavy cream or ointment at night. 4. Skip the harsh cleaners. Limit your use of exfoliants. 5. If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier in your room to add moisture to the air at night.
7 tips for how to keep your skin healthy and hydrated despite the increased handwashing- βœ… Wash your hands with hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soap and warm water (not hot water) for at least 20 seconds. βœ… Rinse off all the soap residue so your skin doesn't become irritated. βœ… Gently pat your skin dry. ❌ Don't scrub your hands dry, air dry, or shake off the water into the air (which can spread droplets all over the room). βœ… If you dry your hands with cotton towels after using the bathroom sink or kitchen sink, wash these hand towels daily. βœ… Apply a hypoallergenic cream to your slightly damp skin after washing your hands (all the way up to the wrist level). If your hands are very dry, use a lotion or cream and then apply an ointment on top. βœ… At night, apply a cream, ointment or petroleum jelly to your hands and then cover them with cotton gloves (or if you don't have any, you can use a pair of cotton socks).
Here are 6 skincare tips to help keep your skin healthy in the fall and winter: 1. Apply moisturizer to your hands after washing them. 2. If your hands are very dry, apply a heavy cream or petroleum jelly at night and then cover your hands with cotton gloves so your skin can get an intensive hydrating treatment as you sleep. 3. Skip the leisurely bath and instead take a quick shower (less than 10 minutes). 4. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water when you shower or wash your face. 5. Apply moisturizer to your slightly damp skin right after you get out of the shower. 6. If the air is dry in your home, use a humidifier.
