When you’re making an aesthetic addition to your home, you may want the wood’s natural beauty to show through. If you absolutely must have the highest quality lumber out there, we can help.
Wood always looks fantastic when it’s brand new, but over time it can rot, destroying its look and its structural integrity. This is one of the big benefits of cypress, since it’s naturally resistant to rot and will look great for years to come.
Rough-cut lumber will conform to the basic sizing standards for dimensional lumber and boards. Basically, dimensional lumber (used extensively for framing houses and other structures) is originally cut to certain dimensions in terms of width and thickness.
In the lumber industry, hardwoods come from slow-growing deciduous trees that are tougher and more dense than softwood. There are around 200 different types that are pliable and plentiful enough to use for lumber.
When buying rough-cut lumber, look for straight and flat rough boards. Bowed, warped, and/or twisted rough boards are much harder to machine. In addition, these qualities in a board can be indicative that the wood is unstable.
Did you know that the grades used to classify the quality of lumber were devised by the National Hardwood Lumber Association or NHLA? This association, founded in 1898, devised a universal grading system that became the standard in evaluating wood.
Two types of lumber are commonly used: select lumber and common lumber. Select lumber is preferred for such projects as furniture and cabinets, when appearance counts. Common lumber is more commonly used for general building and construction.
Often, rough-cut lumber is cut and sold by the board foot, with one board foot being 1"x12"x12." It can also be sold by its true or dimensional size (such as 2"x4").
Softwood lumber is the most common type of wood used for construction. In the United States, this wood is most commonly graded according to the guidelines of the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS 20-70, which is established by the Department of Commerce.
Choose the wood grade based on how the lumber will be used. For many projects where a finished look is not important, common grade is an economical choice. It is below S/B (Selects and Better) grade, but has attractive price points.
Proper lumber selection is very important especially if you are going to use it for outdoor projects. Inappropriate or untreated wood may not be able to withstand the external harsh environments.
While rough-cut lumber is much cheaper than finished lumber, it does require some time and work to make it ready to use for your project. Generally, rough lumber will need to be dried and then jointed or planed before it can be used.
Have you been hesitant to buy the precut pieces of lumber because you’re trying to minimize costs for your project? Remember, there may be instances where buying more expensive materials that allow you to finish the job more quickly could help you save more money overall.
Looking to find rough-cut lumber for table legs? You might want to look for a blank that is rift sawn, or cut so the grain runs diagonally. This means that all four sides of your leg will have the same straight-grained pattern.
While board lumber may deliver a certain aesthetic, for general building and surfaces that will be painted or covered, plywood is a better option. It is less expensive and takes less time and materials to install.
Before you decide to use a more expensive finished lumber that only somewhat meets your dimension requirements, consider the time sensitivity of the project. If you have time before you plan to start, rough-cut cypress could give you a higher degree of dimensional accuracy.
One of the biggest problems with wood is that it tends to attract bugs like termites, especially in warmer climates. Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about this with cypress. Like cedar, cypress has a natural resistance to bugs and pests.
The best quality redwood comes from the heartwood that is resistant to deterioration due to sunlight, moisture and insects. It is used to craft outdoor furniture and decorative carvings. Redwood burls have a "cluster of eyes" figure.
One of the most long-lasting and most insect resistant types of wood is cypress. That’s why it is often used for a variety of outdoor projects and is a popular log for log cabin construction, especially in the south.
Naturally decay-resistant species of wood - cypress, cedar, redwood, teak, and eucalyptus, and others - are excellent choices for exposed outdoor applications such as decks, lawn and patio furniture, shingles, and sill plates.
Unfortunately, natural materials like wood can be susceptible to damage from termites and rot. When you need lumber that’s resistant to these hazards, we may be able to help you find the lumber you need at a fair price.
For outdoor furnishings and structures, you want to choose a wood that’s going to be able to stand up to the elements. Heartwood grades of redwood and cedar, for instance, are both naturally rot and insect resistant.
