Dr. Powell graduated from California State University, Sacramento where he received the Dean's Award as one of the top twelve graduating seniors. He completed medical school at UCLA, where he earned the Ranson J. Arthur Award for Scholarship and Humanism in the Practice of Medicine. After medical school, Dr. Powell completed his pediatric residency at Cedar Sinai Medical Center, where he received both the Cedar-Sinai Neonatology Award and the Riggler Award for the Outstanding Resident. He went on to be Chief of Service for the House Based Pediatric Program at Huntington Memorial Hospital before entering private practice in 1995. His most recent awards include Patient's Choice Award, "One of the Nation's Top Doctors" in US News and World Report, the Castle Connolly's Top Doctors award and Compassionate Doctor recognition award. He is a past-president of the Los Angeles Pediatric Society and served as vice chair and chairman of the department of Pediatrics at Huntington Memorial Hospital for eight years. Dr. Powell is fluent in Portuguese and an avid traveler.
