More than 18 million Americans have symptoms of PAD, or peripheral arterial disease, which is also known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PAD can affect your quality of life, causing leg pain or cramping and limiting your ability to walk or participate in activities. September is a month to honor people who battle circulatory conditions and whom may face limb amputation. Help us spread PAD awareness and encourage early detection this month!

The first step of the day can be a truly excruciating experience for people who suffer from plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia, the band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, can tighten up overnight or anytime you’re at rest, producing severe heel pain when it is first stretched. If your heel pain is making your wakeup call a nightmare, see the heel pain expert, Today’s Podiatrist. www.apma.org/heelpain

You’ve probably heard that diabetes can cause serious ulcers on your feet. Did you know it can also break down the actual structure of your foot? Charcot foot is a condition in which a patient who has nerve damage to the feet (usually caused by diabetes) experiences a series of injuries and changes to the bones and joints of the feet. Over time, these injuries cause the foot to break down and change shape. If you have diabetes, check your feet daily for any changes, especially if you have nerve damage, and be sure to see your podiatrist at least once a year! www.apma.org/charcotfoot

Some folks might enjoy a toe-curling scare as we get closer to Halloween, but if your toes can’t uncurl you have a problem. A hammer toe is the result of an abnormal imbalance of muscles. See your podiatrist before the condition becomes rigid or it may require surgical intervention. https://www.apma.org/hammertoes

Tempted to cram your toes into that beautiful pointed shoe? Tight or narrow shoes can lead to pressure on the joints in your toes and cause a hammer toe to form. Hammer toes can be painful, especially if they rub against your footwear. If not treated promptly, the bending of the joint could become rigid and require surgery. Any sign of toe pain or bending in the joints means it’s time to see your podiatrist. (Link) https://www.apma.org/hammertoes

Never put regular diabetic foot care on the back burner. What seems like a minor cut or bruise can lead to major foot complications if left unchecked. People with diabetes are at an increased risk to develop ulcers on their feet. If you have diabetes, keep up with daily foot checks and regular visits to your podiatrist for treatment. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications. Learn more: https://www.apma.org/diabeticwoundcare
