Dr. Kim is back from a mission trip to Mauritania, a trip he makes to improve care to an underserved population. Health care professionals from Boston, Washington Dc, New Jersey, New York and Korea joined the mission. Over the week the all-volunteer group saw 600+ patients, performed over 100 cataract surgeries, and treated patients, including children, predisposed to blinding glaucoma. The group was welcomed by the military, community leaders and a local ophthalmologist who cares for patients when the group leaves. A clinic was set up in a military hospital and with translation provided by local university students, the group was ready to see patients. Dr. Kim: "What I like about mission work is collaborating with volunteers from abroad to make a difference in people's lives. We see mostly elderly women and men and they are very appreciative when their sight is restored." The mission trips are run by Vision Care Services, an organization that builds good will in vulnerable parts of the world by extending care to underserved patients.
