On Tuesday, the citizens of Fort Smith voted against a sales tax that funded the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, and now the university is weighing other funding options.
Attorney Joey McCutchen believes the citizens of Fort Smith have done their part in funding the University for long enough, "I think also that this tax is unfair in the sense that UA-Fayetteville, UAPB [University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff], UALR [University of Arkansas at Little Rock] are all funded with state dollars and don't have local sales tax. The people of Fort Smith have been more than generous over the last 19 years with their tax dollars. We've built a first-rate university. This tax was never intended to be permanent, which, in effect, it would be had this tax have passed, and it's time to move on."

UAFS weighing options after tax bid voted down
A $0.25 county tax extension that supported The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith failed to pass on the ballot Tuesday night.
“We’re pleased with those results,” Citizens Against Unfair Taxes Chairman Joey McCutchen of Fort Smith said. “The citizens are sick and tired of having some of the highest sales tax rates in the country, which are regressive and fall on the backs of families and elderly folks.”

The National Register of Historic Places has approved maintaining the Confederate monument’s historic designation as the statue heads to its new home at James H. Berry Park.
“The United Daughters of the Confederacy is very pleased by the announcement and approval by the National Park Service to keep the monument listed on the National Register of Historic Places during the transition to the world-class James H. Starting on December 31st, the citizens of Sebastian County took on less of a tax burden.
This is due to the Citizens Against Unfair Taxation, and Chairman Joey McCutchen, fighting the extension of a sales tax that went to University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.
“This wasn’t a referendum on the importance of UAFS. We know it is important to the community, and it still will be. It’s a first-rate university, but it’s time for the state to step up,” - Joey McCutchen

How Senate Bill 208 could affect public meetings in Arkansas
Attorney Joey McCutchen has for years fought for the very important FOIA against the city of Fort Smith.
"The City of Fort Smith spent over $100,000 in McCutchen v. City of Fort Smith in taxpayer money on attorney fees trying to have FOIA declared unconstitutional because the term 'meeting' was not defined," he said.
"And in City of Fort Smith v. Wade, the city of Fort Smith unsuccessfully argued that a meeting could not be held by email," McCutchen added. "The Legislature needs to define the term meeting in clear terms because, as the law currently stands, it is unclear and requires either legislation or more protracted and costly litigation to define."
