Latest McKeen & Associates, PC news

Clear communication between health care workers during an emergency is a must and the lack of it can cost a life as we saw in a recent McKeen & Associates case. The Port Huron man was correctly diagnosed with STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction), which is a blockage of one of the heart’s major arteries, through an ECG performed by a nurse practitioner. Unfortunately, upon arrival in the emergency room, a lifesaving angioplasty was not performed immediately as the cardiologist claimed the ER doctor did not inform him of suspected STEMI. Did you know that a practicing physician may not necessarily be board certified? While most medical specialty areas offer national certification, lack of this certification does not prevent a doctor from practicing in that specialty or even presenting himself as a “specialist.” It is unusual for a doctor and the hospitals they work for to make this lack of certification public, so it always wise to ask “are you board certified?”
The National Law Journal recently contacted McKeen & Associates to inform us that our case, Tran v. William Beaumont, will be featured in its Verdicts Hall of Fame, which will run in its October issue. A jury found Beaumont health workers negligent in their treatment of baby Vinh Tran, who suffered severe brain damage under their care resulting in cerebral palsy. The case came to McKeen & Associates just five days before the Statute of Limitations were up, having languished at a couple other law firms. It resulted in a record-breaking $130.5 million jury verdict for the family in September of 2018.
