March is Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue by mistake. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune disorders. The blood cells in the body's immune system help protect against harmful substances. Examples include bacteria, viruses, toxins, cancer cells, and blood and tissue from outside the body. These substances contain antigens. The immune system produces antibodies against these antigens that enable it to destroy these harmful substances. When you have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system does not distinguish between healthy tissue and potentially harmful antigens. As a result, the body sets off a reaction that destroys normal tissues. Very often with Autoimmune disease there is a delay in diagnosis. Many times symptoms overlap each other and the specific disease won't declare itself immediately leaving patients struggling to find the best treatment. Patients often have serial bloodwork and imaging exams that can include Xrays, Ultrasounds, Catscans and MRI's. Many of these diseases are life long and although there has been many advances in therapies of recent years most still have no cure. Know the signs, symptoms and your family history if you feel you are at risk. https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/whats-the-deal-with-autoimmune-disease
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer. It can affect both men and women and often starts with no symptoms. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into colon cancer. If you're 45 or older or have a family history of colon cancer the time is now to address it. There are different types of screening tests available which include colonoscopy and virtual colonoscopy. Talk to your doctor to see which is the best option for you. Remember screening saves lives!
In celebration of International Women’s Day🎉we recognize and applaud the achievements and perseverance of all women who have paved the way for other women to strive for excellence. Today’s focus for us is on the women who were the pioneers in medicine and radiology paving a road for other females to follow. Out of every 100 radiologists, only about 21 are women, and only 13 out of every 100 radiology leaders are women. As we move forward we continue to strive to break down barriers and narrow the gender gap. We need to continue the drive to advance diversity and address the needs of women and other minorities in radiology. Collectively, we can all work to create an inclusive world for the greater good of all. https://www.aawr.org/Resources/Female-Pioneers-in-Medicine-and-Radiology
