Medical Mutts will be moving in the next few weeks. We have found a facility that meets both our needs of location and space. There is lots to do before we can move in, but we're very excited to share this with you. We've been looking for a property that would allow us to house and train more dogs and help more people in need of our services. When times allow, we'll be opening our doors and celebrating this new milestone for our organization. You can help! Our dogs will need new suites and new playgrounds. If you're interested in contributing, this is a great way to make a difference, maybe honor a loved one, and provide comfortable living quarters for the many service dogs in training to be. For Caleb, "Many typical settings produced so much panic in him that he would run away—he’d “elope from the classroom” and climb trees, or find dogs in yards near his school and sit down and pet them, crying and feeling great anger." Since his service dog Darcy came into his life," Instead of running away, or beginning a cycle of destruction or grief, Caleb turns to Darcy and begins a new kind of cycle: communication, asking for help, receiving love and attention, and staying present in challenging situations." Darcy came to Medical Mutts from, our rescue partners at Tails and Trails Rescue where she had been surrendered by her previous owners. After many months of training, she was placed with Caleb as a Psychiatric service dog. Merry Christmas!
We sometimes assume that choosing punishment or rewards in training is merely a matter of personal preferences. We use the tools that we deem the most effective, and that we have grown proficient with. The choice of rewards over punishers however, is not just a matter of efficiency, ethics and personal choices. Studies on people and animals have shown that negative experiences have a faster and more lasting impact than positive ones. Getting a service dog is both exciting and challenging at first. There is much to learn and both the dog and the person need to get familiar with one another. At Medical Mutts, Team Training is a 10-day process. Eva, our Director of Client Services, works hand in hand with each person to help them through the inevitable ups and downs. She also follows up with each team after they go home, making sure they continue to work well together. Kimberly shares her experience meeting her new diabetic alert dog, Solo, and learning how to work with him. We have an In-Home Medical Alert dog immediately available to the right home. Our IHMA dogs have received all the training needed to help with either diabetes or seizures and will alert, retrieve a phone, medication or a drink, alert another person or 911, help get up, etc. They are not service dogs because they do not qualify for public access, but they can help someone in their house. The big advantage of In-home medical alert dogs is that they are available at half the cost of a regular service dog and with no wait. This is Nike during a play session out in the snow! Nike is adorable and his plush coat is so soft! Nike came to us from a shelter in Kentucky with the hopes of becoming a service dog. However, he has shown that he would be much happier as a pet and companion at home. So Nike is looking for a person to love! Nike is a sweet happy boy once he gets to know you. He can be nervous around some people, so he does need a home without children. He would do best in a quieter environment where there aren't a lot of visitors coming and going. He would prefer to have his people all to himself, so he needs a home where he is the only dog. You won't be missing out though with just Nike in the house. He has enough personality to make up for it! Nike is about 2 years old and weighs around 60 pounds. He is vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative. He is scheduled to be neutered next week. His adoption fee of $200 includes 2 private sessions with one of our trainers to get started on basic obedience. Our dogs can be seen by appointment only. Time in a home environment is very valuable to the dogs' training. The dogs needing fostered are at various levels of training spanning from just arrived into the program, to close to graduation. Fostering can be as much or as little time as you are available. No matter how long the stay is, the pups will certainly appreciate it!
