Happy National Women’s Health and Fitness Day to all the wonderful women out there! We would like you to take a minute to focus attention on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for yourself. For many women, looking after others is a way of life. Whether it is tending to children, caring for aging parents, maintaining a household, or enduring a grueling work schedule - women tend to have a lot on their plates. Often, busy schedules result in a lack of self-care, which can compromise women's health. Find a meaningful way to celebrate Women's Health & Fitness Day- for yourself and the ones you love. Schedule that yearly health checkup you keep putting off, go for a walk, find ways to reduce stress, and over all take a moment to take care of yourself. Because you too are important! #NationalWomensHealthAndFitnessDay #WomensHealthAndFitnessDay #SelfCare #YouAreImportant

It’s #SafeToysAndGiftsMonth, so spread the word and raise awareness this December. Here are some ways to be sure you’re shopping safely this year: • Inspect toys before you buy them. Try to avoid toys with sharp edges, lots of little parts or parts that can be easily pulled off. • The age and skill level marked on the toy should match the age and skill level of the child you’re buying for. • Label check! Toys should have a label for ATSM (American Society for Testing and Materials) that proves it’s up to standard. • Do not give toys with ropes, cords, or that can heat up, and avoid crayons and markers unless they are labeled nontoxic. Follow this advice, and your whole family is sure to have a very merry (and injury-free) holiday season!

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month. The theme for 2021 is “Best for You. Best for Baby.” We know that not all birth defects can be prevented. But you can increase your chances of having a healthy baby by doing what you can to be your healthiest self both before and during pregnancy. What is best for you is also best for your baby. Birth defects are structural changes that affect one or more parts of the body (e.g. heart, brain, foot). They develop most often during the first three months of pregnancy, when a baby’s organs are forming and can cause problems in overall health, how the body develops and functions. About 1 in 33 babies in the U.S. is born with a birth defect each year, according to the CDC. Common birth defects include congenital heart defects, cleft lip and left palate and spina bifida. Your genetics, behaviors and social and environmental factors can impact the risk for birth defects, and not all birth defects can be prevented. However, there are things you can do to increase your chance of having a healthy, fully-term pregnancy and baby – and National Birth Defects Prevention Month is the perfect time to learn about them (March of Dimes, https://www.marchofdimes.org/complications/january-is-national-birth-defects-prevention-month.aspx# ) (CDC, https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/prevention.html) 5 Tips for Preventing Birth Defects from the CDC: • Before you get pregnant, try to reach a healthy weight. • Be sure to take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day. • Book a visit with your healthcare provider before stopping or starting any medicine. • Become up-to-date with all vaccines, including the flu shot. • Boost your health by avoiding substances that are harmful during pregnancy. Carson and Brown were nominated by patients they cared for in our facility. -- “I had to come to the hospital every three weeks for five days to get chemo and I always looked forward to the days Ellen was my nurse,” a patient wrote of Ellen’s dedicated care. -- “I cannot thank Jonna enough for her devotion to her duty. We are proud to be observing Brain Injury Awareness Month at Memorial Medical Center. Memorial cares for patients with traumatic brain injuries in many ways. When an injury first occurs, many patients are cared for here. We also see patients with a history of TBI when they seek care at MMC for other medical reasons. Our rehab team is specially trained to help patients with both acute and chronic TBI. Rehab professionals including physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists can help our patients with TBI manage their current medical needs to the best of their ability. People with TBI may benefit from incorporating interventions that address memory, attention, emotional and sensory regulation, behaviors, impulsivity, and safety and social awareness. Providing all patients with the individualized care they need is what we strive to do every day at MMC. An important message from MMC Chief Medical Officer Dolores Gomez, MD: In the coming months, we expect access to the vaccine to begin to open up more for the general public, as vaccine supplies and distribution channels increase and drug manufacturers bring new vaccines forward for authorization. Remember that, at this time, the best way for the public to find out when and where the COVID-19 vaccine will be available to them is to register with the New Mexico Department of Health at cvvaccine.nmhealth.org. Memorial is not currently a vaccination site for the general public. With enhanced access and additional vaccine options becoming available in our community, you may be thinking…which vaccine is best and do I get to choose? My advice is simple — get the first COVID-19 vaccine available to you regardless of the manufacturer or dose regimen.
