Thinking of getting a cat? 🐱 Make sure you can provide for their basic health needs first. Once ready, here’s how to create a warm welcome:
1. Make quality time for companionship.
2. Provide regular, suitable meals with constant supply of fresh water.
3. Provide a clean and comfortable bed.
4. Provide outdoor access or be prepared. to empty and clean a litter tray on a daily basis.
5. Provide a stimulating and safe environment.
6. Groom your cat regularly.
Drs. Lowe and Folger performing veterinary services in El Paraiso, Honduras in an annual veterinary mission team project. In addition to veterinary medical and surgical services, the team has recruited funding to build 10 water purification tanks for villagers to have clean water. In 22 years we have provided these services to tens of thousands of farm animals and pets. This project has been supported by National Veterinary Associates and others, and all of the team members pay their own way there. Amazing community service provided by this team.

In our continuing series of "Things Bad Cats Should Not Eat", this is our latest edition. This foreign body was easily palpated by Dr. Lowe, showed up on the radiographs. Then was delivered from this kitty by Dr. Lowe and our great technician Casey! Today- doing well, and running around the clinic!
Very funny! Thanks Bonnie!

My cat Patches is a great example of who we are at Memorial Cat Hospital. She is 19 years old and has: Inflammatory bowel disease, chronic/active pancreatitis, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus. And she has a great life- this is her this AM screaming at her servant (my wife) to be fed MORE or maybe something DIFFERENT. Isn't she cool?

November is pet diabetes month. You may be unaware that your cat may have diabetes. If left untreated, diabetes can cause a number of serious health issues. Risks that may lead to diabetes can include, middle to older age, genetics, breed and obesity.
If you think your cat has symptoms, ensure they have a proper diet and exercise and visit your veterinarian to get tested. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent or delay health complications.

Often this can be prevented with a high quality diet, parasite preventatives, regular grooming and supplements. If they are still suffering despite your best efforts, consider taking them to the veterinarian.
Potentials causes: Food or environmental allergies, parasites, bacterial or fungal infections, systemic disorders, cold weather, poor nutrition or bathing habits.
Treatment: Treatment depends on the cause, therefore it is best to see your veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis.

What is your cat's petting zone? Also, how does your cat like being held? Which one is your cat?
1. I'll sit on your lap, but don't touch me
2. Hold me like a baby
3. Pet me constantly and I will vocalize my detest if you stop.
4. Don't you dare carry me anywhere!
5. I will bite you if you touch me there!
6. It's 3am and I want you to pet me now!
7. I will be in the other room ignoring you.
8. If you make a noise while petting me, I will jump 10 feet in the air
9. Rub my belly please!
10. Don't touch me unless you are going to feed me. 🐱

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED MICROCHIPPING YOUR CAT?
Depending on their breed and size, most cats can be microchipped from the age of 10-12 weeks onwards.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE AN INDOOR CAT?
If they get outside accidentally, they can become lost more easily and may not be wearing a collar or ID tag. Microchipping your indoor-only cat can give you peace of mind and ensure your pet is returned to you in the event she does get lost.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
A cat microchip is implanted through a syringe that injects it underneath the skin. Although there is no universally agreed upon location, a cat microchip is usually implanted between the shoulder blades. At approximately 12mm long, it is about the same size as a grain of rice. Implanting a cat microchip only takes a few seconds, and it is meant to last for the entirety of your cat's lifetime. Cat microchipping is considered very safe. No local or general anesthetic is required.
WILL A MICROCHIP TELL ME MY CAT'S LOCATION?
It is important to understand that a pet microchip is not a GPS device providing real time tracking capabilities. Rather, a cat microchip is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device. Unlike a GPS device, a cat microchip doesn't require power, and it is activated by an animal shelter or veterinarian waving an RFID scanner across a cat's body where the microchip is embedded. The scanner activates an identification number, which is linked in a database to your ownership information. This brings us to an incredibly important part of cat microchipping: Registration!
An RFID chip itself is useless if your registration isn't submitted and then kept current. Don't hesitate to ask your veterinarian any questions about the registration process, in order to ensure your beloved feline friend can be accurately identified with his or her pet microchip.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY LOST CAT IS FOUND?
Once the Veterinarian or shelter get the chip's number, as well as the information about the company that made the chip, they'll contact that company to find the cat's owner. To our knowledge, just about every animal shelter and veterinarian in the United States has the RFID devices to detect a microchip for cats.
BOOK AN APPOINTMENT NOW!
If you are ready to schedule an appointment for cat microchipping services, please contact us today. Our staff would be happy to help you register your feline friend with the pet recovery service database.
I want to thank all of our great clients for all the presents. I know this has been a hard year for all of us. The "curb-side" service is not what we want, as it deprives all of us of our traditional bond between our clients and patients and veterinary staff. But next year we will come back fully "in-person" as soon as we all get vaccinated. God bless all of you, and have a Merry Christmas!

Memorial Cat will remain closed today and tomorrow, February 17. The clinic lost power last night so the server is down as well, meaning we are unable to answer phone calls from home. We are still able to access text messages and emails, and will be monitoring both of these today and tomorrow. Any cats requiring urgent care should be taken to your nearest emergency clinic.
Update: We will remain closed for Tuesday, February 16th for the safety of our staff and our clients. As of right now we are planning on resuming regular hours Wednesday but will be monitoring weather conditions. Stay safe and warm, everyone!
HR Brown has a shelter open for people with pets. Dr. Lowe is down there working for Animal Control of Houston to make sure everyone is OK (the 4-legged ones).

We have very limited staff able to make it in and the clinic does not have water yet, so we will be focusing on medication refills, food, and urgent care appointments. Please email or text before 12, and the phone lines will be open after 12. We appreciate your patience in advance! We are here for you!
This is patches Folger, now at rest.

Patches 11-1-01 to 2-18-2021. She had a long life and we loved her. She reminded me of my mother. Set in her ways, rarely spoke unless there was something to say. Liked what she liked and ignored what she did not. Mildly anti-social, she never liked any other cat, including her brother Tango. She liked to be rubbed in just a certain way. At the end of her years, she permitted us to medicate her with all kinds of medicines including insulin for diabetes and she went down during a climate disaster just like my Mom- during Hurricane Ike. Now Patches is at rest. She loved Sherry Burton the most!
We remain closed today, February 18. Power has been on and off at the clinic since last night, but we are still without water. Dr. Folger has been checking in, and tells us Dorsey is doing just fine!
Chances are we will remain closed tomorrow as well. We are hoping the power and water situation improves enough to open on Saturday. Will continue to update you here.
Samantha and Dr. Lowe (and Bodhi!) will continue to check the email.
We hope you and your cats are staying as comfortable and warm as you can! We will see you soon.

Head Technician Kat, me, soon to be Dr. Alex Forst, and Dr. Lowe. For 25 years we have sponsored senior veterinary students from all over the world to immerse themselves in feline medicine. Alex has been a joy to have with us, and she is ready to start her new job as a staff veterinarian in a small animal practice in Arkansas.
Thanks Bonnie!
