North, our resident assistance dog in training, wishes you a safe and happy holiday. Curator Courtney and North are continually training and walking the zoo, allowing the animals here to grow more and more accustomed to seeing assistance dogs. Courtney's goal is that the animals view a trained dog like they would another guest, making the zoo more easily accessible to anyone visiting with a furry companion. Did you know that our African penguins are warm weathered penguins? As it gets colder, you may not see them outside. They'll be behind the scenes staying warm and toasty. Happy Thursday.
We are saddened to announce that our 26-year-old ostrich Olive Oil was euthanized after sustaining a severe injury. Olive Oil came to Memphis Zoo in 2004 and quickly won the heart of keepers. She was known to have a gentle inquisitiveness about her and was often seen walking to the fence line to people watch when she wasn't 'supervising" her keepers. While "supervising", she would also "help" keepers by picking up buckets and rakes. "She was a good ostrich with just the right amount of attitude and will be sorely missed." African Veldt Zookeeper Jason Bankston.

We can’t celebrate World Frog Day without highlighting our special dusky gopher frogs! Dusky gopher frogs were listed as endangered in 2002. They were only found in three small ponds in south Mississippi. Since 2005, Memphis Zoo has made giant strides in saving the gopher frog populations. In 2020, the Memphis Zoo’s breeding programs had massive success when our dusky gopher frogs began breeding naturally in captivity. This is a great sign that the thousands of frogs that we have released back into the wild are breeding naturally and reviving the wild populations. We are proud of our conservation biologists who have worked so hard and we are beyond excited for the progress these animals have made. We look forward to seeing their continued success in the wild!
