Joyce Bass Slaton is a Merced College Alumna who moved to Chowchilla, California after living in Oklahoma and Louisiana. Her family had a dream of owning land and they did just that. Over the years the family acquired 88 acres of land! Soon after, Slaton married her husband, Walter. The couple moved to Merced and after a few years, acquired their own piece of land, 10 acres to be exact. Joyce attended Merced College and CSU Stanislaus where she earned her teaching degree. She had big goals and aspirations and achieved them all. According to an interview with the Merced Sun-Star, Joyce said, "When I worked as a substitute teacher in Merced, Winton, and Planada schools, I encouraged my kids to reach for the stars." Thank you Joyce for inspiring students then and now!

Enjoy your four day weekend!
In a time when vaccine distribution through the State of California has been slowed by a number of factors — particularly so in the historically underserved San Joaquin Valley — it took a true team effort to ensure local residents could be vaccinated. Thousands of Merced County residents are receiving COVID-19 vaccines this week and next, thanks to a collaborative effort by the county, the City of Merced, Dignity Health-Mercy Medical Center, Merced College, University of California Health, and UC Merced. #StopTheSpreadMerced
Kenneth Roberts is an alumni of Merced College! Originally from Fresno, Kenneth and his family moved to Merced in 1952. Fun fact: Kenneth and his father, Vernie, graduated alongside one another from Merced College in June of 1967! His parents stressed the importance of a good education so following his time at Merced College, Kenneth attended Fresno Pacific University where he graduated with his BA in 1970. Tomorrow is Kenneth's birthday! Leave the Merced College alum birthday wishes in the comments! #BlackHistoryMonth

Over the past two weeks, Merced College, Merced County Public Health, UC Merced, UC Health and Dignity Health have joined forces to vaccinate over 4,000 Merced County residents! We would like to recognize our oldest recipient, a 103-year-old World War II nurse who, in the last several years, has dedicated her time to making beanies for newborn babies at Mercy Medical Center! This mass vaccination clinic would not have been possible without our team of over 100 volunteers, Merced College nursing staff and students, Merced City Fire and Merced’s new fire chief, Derek Parker. Thank you all for giving up your time to serve our community. We’d also like to thank Roy Mercado and H&W for feeding our volunteers and RHM Farms for donating gift bags!

Join us tonight for a documentary about Black Lives Matter. In 2013 in Sanford, Florida, vigilante George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin. As a result, the struggle against police violence flared up under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and turned into one of the biggest grassroots movements in the United States. This film interviewed co-founder Patrisse Cullors about the various forms of violence against black citizens, and why resistance is essential. Join us from 4-6pm TODAY!

It’s hard not to feel a sense of awe, and feelings of liberty and thankfulness, and a powerful respect and appreciation for the visionary and courageous leaders and trailblazers in our country’s storied and often complicated past."
