Today is Mercy Day! Mercy Retirement & Care Center is part of a long legacy of care. We trace our history to the 1907 opening of Mercy Retirement & Care Center in Oakland, founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Today marks 193 years since Sisters of Mercy Founder Catherine McAuley opened the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland. Its doors have remained open since 1827 to serve the poor, sick, and uneducated. Thank you to all our staff at Mercy Retirement & Care Center for the sacred work you do every day and for being part of the history of MRCC which has been serving in the Fruitvale neighborhood for more than 100 years.
Elder Care Alliance September 21 at 11:54 PM · Every 3 seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. The number of people living with dementia around the world is over 50 million, which is expected to almost double every 20 years, reaching 152 million by 2050. Elder Care Alliance’s innovative and engagement-focused memory care program is based on the I’m Still Here™ philosophy. This evidence-based approach is founded on the belief that every person in need of memory support, dementia care, or Alzheimer’s care is fully capable of experiencing a high quality of life, regardless of the severity of memory loss. " My Grandpa and I do a lot of things together, But fishing with my Grandpa is the best ever. I love going to the lake when the sky is all blue. I love riding in my Grandpa's boat, too. The next trip to the lake I don't want to miss. Just being with my Grandpa is better than catching fish." -- Dawneisha Washington Did you know September 12 is Grandparents Day? This year’s World Mental Health Day comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods are threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye. Please take today and examine how your mental health is. Take some time for yourself, meditate, explore nature, or to just be good to yourself. These times are hard, but we're all in this TOGETHER! #ECAStrong

Mercy Brown Bag Program would not be possible without all our amazing volunteers. Thank you Sutapa for all you do! Mercy Brown Bag Program October 25 at 6:10 PM · Meet Sutapa. Sutapa Mallik is one of the dedicated community volunteers who have stepped forward to help support seniors during the pandemic. She helps MBBP make the most of a partnership between DoorDash and the United Way by picking up grocery bags from our Oakland warehouse, driving them to a pick-up site at Faith Lutheran Church in Castro Valley, and distributing to DoorDash drivers who then deliver to seniors living in Castro Valley, Hayward and San Leandro. Volunteers like Sutapa help extend MBBP's reach in Alameda County and ensure that we can respond to new requests for assistance. MBBP has added 1,000 new seniors since March which is a staggering 20% increase in service in just over 6 months. MBBP couldn't keep up with the need without reliable volunteers like Sutapa. Sutapa says "my weekly commitment e-x-a-c-t-l-y fits what I'm looking for. The thought of senior citizens, stuck at home during the pandemic, possibly going hungry, scared by food insecurity, is unbearable. So, in loving memory of my Dida (Grandmother) this is how I choose to spend my volunteer time. It makes me feel SO GOOD to be able to do this!"
