Congratulations to our latest Daisy Nurse award winner Brittany McKenzie, B.S.N., RN, from our emergency department! The sister of a patient who already had underlying medical conditions when she arrived at the ED one night wrote this about Brittany: "She took it upon herself to go above and beyond, so that when my sister arrived in her room, she had already had her blood work, IV and CT scan completed. If not for Brittany, she may have waited many more hours for those tests, but instead was discharged very early that morning." Nice work! #MeritusHealthCareHeroes #MeritusPride

During the fall, there are national recognition months for both ovarian cancer awareness and breast cancer awareness. Last month, Meritus Gynecologic Oncology Specialists raffled a basket of goodies which went to winner Laura Ireland! The team at the Meritus Center for Breast Health took time recently to pose in their pink gear surrounded by pink ribbons, the color of October's awareness month. Effective Monday, Oct. 19, the Meritus drive-thru COVID-19 screening center hours will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, with Saturday hours remaining the same, from 8 a.m.-noon. The screening center is located behind Meritus Medical Plaza at 13620 Crayton Blvd., in Hagerstown. COVID-19 screening is available there at no cost to the patient, for all ages, with no appointment or referral needed.

Due to the increasingly high volume of traffic that the Meritus drive-thru COVID-19 screening center has seen day after day in recent weeks, patients can now expect their test results to take up to five days to become available. Heather Mathews has dedicated her entire life to caring for and keeping our patients safe. When initially facing COVID-19, she was at the hospital not just on day shifts, but many times working all three shifts to make sure her staff had what was needed. She made surgical caps for everyone. She made sure they were fed and rested. She always knows what is going on with each and every patient and their families. All of these months in, Heather continues to show tireless dedication and professionalism during this crisis. Katie Rohrbaugh understands emergency preparedness and has taught many about managing crises. On top of all of her emergency management duties, Katie has been the shoulders to stand on for the drive-thru screening center for COVID-19 tests, fulfilling requests from staffing to signage; directing traffic to being a customer sounding board. Laura Minteer has gone above and beyond to help the employee health team the last few weeks, answering calls and supporting the department through her work in incident command. Additionally, employee health has received help from Linda Shanholtz, Rhonda Stover, Stella Earp-Pennington and Sarah Boarman. Anna Camp not only takes care of her ICU patients diagnosed with COVID, but reaches out to her peers to ensure they have what they need each shift. Her teamwork is amazing! Amy Miller has always been willing to pick up extra shifts and that hasn't stopped during this pandemic. She has been in the COVID isolation area and recently stepped up to help with three STEMI patients within half an hour, all PUIs. Marla Westley is a Helping Hands support person, going above and beyond her regular 40-hour work week by assisting patient care areas during evenings and on weekends. It's amazing to have so many extra sets of hands at the hospital during this incredibly busy time! When the pandemic began, Dr. Catherine Feaga stepped in among the first line of responders to help with the increased number of inpatients. Worried about her family's potential exposure, but dedicated in her call to serve and respond to COVID, she rented a local Airbnb and isolated herself. Recently, she has been instrumental in coordinating the involvement of residents to the response, taken on leadership to organize and schedule the inpatient surge plan, all while continuing to deliver babies, admit and care for newborns, lead inpatient services, teach residency lectures and facilitate faculty meetings. She is a true hero for the time, energy and commitment she has put in - staying past midnight and working weekends. #MeritusPride #Caring4Md

Jeff Wolfe asked a recent emergency department visitor where her coat was when she came in from the cold. She said she didn't own one. The person was admitted as a patient and one of Jeff's co-workers noticed a Christmas box with a coat in it while in her patient room. Sparking up a conversation, the employee asked about the gift and the patient said that one of the security officers bought her a coat, hat, scarf and mittens and surprised her! Over the past 2 days we pushed approximately 200 staff and people we support through the COVID Clinic. The Meritus Team was amazing! They were extremely well organized and efficiently moved everyone through. Signage was clearly marked and easy to follow. Meritus Team members were friendly, helpful and caring. This was especially appreciated by those who might have been on the fence about the vaccine.
The Washington County Community is blessed to have Meritus Medical Center!

In his leadership role, he oversees the medical practices that comprise Meritus Health Medical Group. Raven is "always on top of her work and always helpful" and Michelle "has embraced a new policy for checking patients' blood glucose and notifies the nurses immediately if the numbers are out of range." Nice work ladies!

The Meritus vaccine clinic is scheduling appointments for this Saturday, March 13, for Washington County residents 65 and older ONLY. With cases again ticking up here and in many other states, possibly driven by variants, Maryland officials are trying to get the treatment to those most at risk for severe illness.
Due to high winds, to keep everyone safe, the Meritus drive-thru COVID-19 screening center behind Meritus Medical Plaza, 13620 Crayton Blvd., in Hagerstown, will close for the remainder of today. The center will reopen for regular hours tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., if wind conditions are more favorable. Thank you for understanding.
Today was the official kickoff of the COVID-19 mass vaccination site at the Hagerstown Premium Outlets with the first shots given and a visit from Governor Larry Hogan and other state and county leaders. Meritus Health is serving as a clinical partner with the state for the site. Qualified residents may pre-register for an appointment by visiting https://onestop.md.gov/govax or calling

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most commonly reported symptoms among long-haulers include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain.
