Harry Brearley was a metallurgist in England conducting research in the early 1900s to find a metal for a gun chamber that would not wear down from the explosive force of a gunshot. By accident, Brearley created a type of steel that did not rust. Called "rustless steel" for many years, this important invention eventually became known as "stainless steel."
