Important words from Dr. Andrew French: "While early confusion was fueled by initial messaging that face coverings don’t minimize exposure to the virus, the science is abundantly clear - masks do guard against community spread. In other words, by wearing masks, we protect others. And since asymptomatic infection with COVID-19 happens frequently, universal mask-wearing is an essential tool in our protection arsenal while we wait on a vaccine."

Thanksgiving offers a perfect opportunity to express our overwhelming gratitude to each and every amazing Centura Health caregiver. The challenges they face are even greater during COVID-19, yet they continue to amaze us with their compassion, expertise and commitment to each and every patient we serve. Providing the highest quality patient care and safety are at the core of our health ministry, which is why it is with tremendous honor that we congratulate five of our hospitals – Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, Mercy Regional Medical Center, Longmont United Hospital, Penrose Hospital, and St. Francis Medical Center (Penrose-St. Francis Health Services) – for being recognized with The Leapfrog Top Hospital Awards. It was truly a historic week for our health ministry and our communities across Colorado and western Kansas. We received the first allotments of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at every one of our hospitals this week, and as a result of incredible teamwork and collaboration across our health system we began vaccinating thousands of our frontline caregivers. The arrival of the first vaccine for COVID-19 is a momentous occasion, but it will take many months for supply to catch up with demand. In the meantime, COVID-19 remains a dangerous and deadly virus. As a community, we must continue to wear masks, socially distance, wash our hands frequently, and stay home when not feeling well. #MaskUp

With each dose of vaccine administered, we move closer to an end to this devastating pandemic.
While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. “I believe TMS is really saving my life.” After years of living with severe depression, medication wasn’t helping Maria Bouzis. Then her psychiatrist referred her to Centura Porter Adventist Hospital for a safe, effective procedure called TMS. “It’s actually really soothing and comfortable. You just sit there and relax.”
TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the part of the brain that controls mood. Each session takes about half an hour and is delivered under the supervision of one of our board-certified psychiatrists.
For more information and questions about TMS or to make a referral, please call us at 303-715-7765. We look forward to providing the very best possible care, and hope, for patients struggling with depression.

"I am doing this to give hope to all who are afraid of the vaccine. It pains me when there is false information that gives people fear instead of courage. Scientists are working day and night to come up with a solution to this virus, and we really need to trust our system and give it a chance to protect us. Let's come together and do this for the sake of humanity, and let's get over it and go back to our normal lives."

We're committed to ensuring everyone in our communities -- regardless of race, color or ability to pay -- has access to COVID-19 vaccinations as well as reliable information and education about the vaccine. To raise awareness about the vaccine in Spanish-speaking communities, we're holding vaccination clinics for promotoras. In Latinx communities, promotoras are community members who receive specialized training to provide health education to their fellow residents.
The first promotoras vaccination clinic, held this past week at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, is just part of our ongoing effort to address longstanding inequities in vaccination rates in communities of color.

Two years ago, Justina and Dan Oldehoff gave birth to their first son, Carter. He was just 24 weeks old and weighed only 1.5 pounds. Carter fought hard in our NICU at Littleton Adventist Hospital, but tragically he died four days later.
Justina and Dan turned their experience, and their grief, into something wonderful for other families dealing with premature birth, loss and the NICU journey. On behalf of Carter's Cause, the organization they created in their first son's memory, Justina and Dan donated 250 NICU care packages for current and future families in our NICU care at Littleton Adventist.
Their work on Carter's Cause also led to a surprise 7Everday Hero award from Denver7. Thank you, Justina and Dan, for your inspiring work.

Today is National Wear Red Day, part of a coast-to-coast effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and to save lives. Here are some great reasons to GO RED today:
G: Get Your Numbers. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol.
O: Own Your Lifestyle. Stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy. It's up to you. No one can do it for you.
R: Realize Your Risk. We think it won't happen to us, but heart disease kills one of every three women.
E: Educate Your Family. Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.
D: Don't Be Silent. Tell every woman you know that heart disease is our No. 1 killer.

As mesmerizing as it is to watch this time-lapse of our mass vaccination clinic in Colorado Springs, we're more in awe of the dozens of caregivers, volunteers, firefighters, EMTs, police officers and others who came out Saturday to help more than 2,300 people get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Surgery is all about precision, and spine surgery patients at our Avista Adventist Hospital can have renewed peace of mind that their procedure is even more precise. Avista Adventist Hospital recently hosted the first procedure in Colorado using new integrated robotic technology to perform more accurate and efficient spine surgery.
Dr. Sharad Rajpal used the technology to help a retired Boulder scientist who was suffering from severe pain that prevented him from walking. He is now home recovering with minimal pain. Dr. Rajpal was one of three surgeons nationwide who became the first to utilize the Mazor Robotic Guidance System with Midas Rex high-speed drills.
“I believe this technology allows surgeons to perform spinal procedures better than we ever have previously by allowing more concise planning and execution in the operating room,” Dr. Rajpal says. “The ability to improve outcomes and safety for our patients is tremendous.”
We're so excited that this technology is available to our communities. Congratulations, Dr. Rajpal and Avista Adventist Hospital!

Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

Do you know what has us feeling the love this Valentine's Day? These sweet, thoughtful notes made by students at The Peak School in Frisco and Altona Middle School in Longmont for our incredible caregivers.
This Valentine's Day is a little sweeter knowing 2,000 educators across our communities received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Saturday. With a special allotment of vaccine from the state, we held educator vaccination clinics at six Centura hospitals yesterday. We're administering more educator doses at clinics early this week as well.
We know vaccinating our teachers helps ensure the promise of an eventual return to normalcy, allowing educators to more quickly get back to the work they love -- providing face-to-face instruction for our young learners. ❤️

Did you know cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death worldwide, with more people dying each year from heart attacks and strokes than any other cause? Cardiac and vascular diseases can strike anyone -- men and women of all ages, races, and economic classes. Fortunately, there are steps we can all take to identify and reduce our risk.
A calcium score heart scan helps identify calcified plaque levels in your heart arteries. If your score is elevated, you can make appropriate lifestyle and medication changes. These changes may reduce your chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke, possibly averting a life-threatening event.
Because we know how important heart health is, we offer calcium score heart scans for $99. There is no preparation required, and no referral is needed. For more information and to schedule a calcium score heart scan at one of our facilities near you, visit www.centura.org/care-and-health/coronary-artery-calcium-screening.

We're humbled and honored to be a major contributor to the new Charles J. Blackwood, MD, Endowed Memorial Scholarship to support Black and other underrepresented medical students at CU Medicine. Dr. Blackwood, a native Coloradan who in 1947 became the first African American to graduate from CU's School of Medicine, was a pioneer in every sense of the word.
"Dr. Blackwood serves as an inspiration to Black physicians throughout Colorado, and an endowment in his name to benefit scholarships for Black medical students is incredibly appropriate and long overdue." says Dr. Oswaldo Grenardo, Centura's Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer and a family medicine physician. "Honoring Dr. Blackwood’s legacy and supporting this important mechanism to increase the number of Black physicians was a perfect fit for Centura and our continuing work on Social Justice initiatives."

One year ago today, we treated the first confirmed COVID-19 patient in the state of Colorado at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco. As we reflect on the past year, we remember how our 21,000 caregivers stepped up in the face of immense challenges to do what they do best - care for our patients and our communities. They extend compassion, hope and healing with every interaction, and they meet each day with courage, perseverance and kindness. While our COVID-19 response continues, we want to take a moment on this one-year anniversary to thank our caregivers for all they have done, and continue to do, for our healing ministry.
One year after COVID-19 first arrived in our communities, the fight isn't over for our incredible health care workers.

What an amazing example of whole person care! When an 80-year-old cancer patient at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center missed two recent appointments, her care team noticed and contacted her out of concern for her wellbeing. They learned the patient's water heater had broken and her home's pipes had burst due to the recent extreme cold, leaving her without running water. Nothing brings us greater joy than sending you home from the hospital to complete your recovery. But it's important to be prepared for your return home.
• Make certain you know what medications and/or treatments you will need once home.
• Ask what you should watch for that would require a call to your caregiver and which caregiver to call if questions come up.
• Also ask when you should schedule follow up appointments.
