A TOMATO A DAY Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin are the most common cancers in the United States. Commonly referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, these cancers are increasingly being more accurately referred to as “keratinocyte carcinoma” (KC) skin cancer, with basal cell carcinomas accounting for around 80% of KC cases and squamous cell carcinomas comprising about 20% of cases. While these cancers are not usually deadly, they can be costly to treat and potentially disfiguring. The good news is that recent laboratory research suggests that eating a diet rich in tomatoes may reduce the risk of developing KC skin cancer by half. More research is needed, but it couldn’t hurt to increase tomato (juice) consumption. Our physicians are trained to diagnose cancerous moles and other lesions. In the event of a skin cancer diagnosis, we offer the most up-to-date treatment. We perform skin cancer surgeries at all three of our locations. Give yourself the gift of peace of mind by calling us to schedule an appointment. You can also learn more about our wide range of services by visiting us on the web at www.docfreeman.com. P.S. Tomatoes contain carotenoids, the pigmenting compounds that give them their red color. Previous research suggests that carotenoids may help protect the skin from sunburn. DOCFREEMAN.COM Michael J.
